You tube channel set up tips

Yeah the set up looks fairly easy I'm more thinking the editing and making look good aspect

 This is also not to dissuade anyone from creating because some "one man shows" have done quite well with only one person doing all the work. And believe me, it's a LOT of work & effort for very little reward. I now have a better desktop computer and the latest Pinnacle studio editing program, but for a 30 minute video on average it takes about 5hrs to edit a video of that length. Previously over the last several years of the channel- this took FIFTEEN hours for a 30 minute video. That's after you have been doing the thing (whatever the subject of the video actually is) for a month or a few weeks of filming, saving and oganizing clips, wrenching or riding. All the while keeping in mind your end result as you do the thing. You'll start to work differently to be sure that you get the "shot" because you know what you want in editing. This slows down your tasks but it produces a much better product.

 I'm a bit old school in that I use actual cameras rather than a phone. Some creators use a phone and do quite well with it, but I prefer at least 2 cameras and multiple angles. The best way to create content you and hopefully your audience will enjoy watching is to compare your video film angles, shot segments and talking points to a TV show (or several shows) that you like to watch. These days I create and film in a basic way and I have a formula that works for me. The core subscriber base for this method today is very loyal and I enjoy it.
A couple years ago I kept track of every hour that I spent working on a V8 truck, filming it, moving cameras, lighting & script. Then I tracked exaclty how much time I spent at the desktop producing the video itself. I had racked up over 90 hours of effort to put out a less than 20 minute video.

It would be an interesting series for sure, but in a month from launch I wouldn't expect it to have gained much traction unless your very lucky/ get the search terms absolutly spot on. Fairly simple filming/editing does work well.

Plus keep in mind that doing a job whilst you film it takes a lot longer to complete (before you edit etc), an hour to get 1 minute of finished footage seems a normal ratio all in.
Regular, shorter uploads will help gain traction but you need to be disciplined to keep to the schedule as numbers drop if you start missing uploads.

But def give it a go, it would make for a great series and to see the other work you do too documented with tips/advice for those much more artistic than me that might fancy giving it a go too

As a consumer (and a fairly fussy one) apart from what's already been said above I'd say personality plays a big part in it. Some people I'd happily watch flat packing a cardboard box, others just aren't suited to vlog type content. People like the Binky team, alexcrosse, ToolsnTrack(Tommy) grenade(Paul) are all good, most others not so much.
Also music can make or break it (for me). Too much, wrong genre, too loud and distracting normally makes me stop watching, obviously you can't please everyone, but very careful choice of music (if you use it) is important.

A few basics I'd advise on as well.

Someone told me that if you have ameuter videos skills, folks can live with that. They can't however, live with bad sound. A simple way to get good sound is to get a lav mic with a muff on it, along with a Rode Video Micro, or Movo's copy of it. That really improves the video. Your phone will do as a recorder. Something like Rode's Wireless Go can make sound recording much easier, but of course, it's more kit to invest in.

I tried to do the videos, but TBH, it's a massive time investment. Filming isn't so bad, once you had the knack. Editing it to a standard which you are happy with, does take a long time! Maybe I'm too fussy, but I could spend hours editing a video.

A mate's mate does the videos on motorways on YouTube (Auto Shennanigans). I'd say while his manner is tedious at times, he nails the videography, sound, and presentation. But to make those 10 minute videos, it takes him near a day! No way can that be done if you have a day job, or if you need YouTube as your initial source of income.

The way Roadkill did stuff, had an army of people, and many scenes took them forever to film, which Dave Freiburger touched on in one of the RoadKill Extra videos. I suppose you need to be realistic in what you can achieve within a limited means and time.

It can be done, but it's very tough to do. To the folks who have made a go of it, well done (y). HubNut (dollywobbler), released on Twitter how much he earned, and how long it took him to earn that much. TLDR: A long time.
