1984 VW T25/T3 Double Cab Pickup – West Mids £7000
Continuing the sort out of my Late Granddads stuff, and unfortunately his double cab is going to have to go. He died a year ago (in fact exactly a year ago as I write) and we haven’t used it, and the last thing I want is for it to sit and fall to pieces, when he had invested a load of time and effort into getting it so tidy
The basics:
- A reg 1984 1.9 Petrol Waterboxer double cab
- Masala Red (relatively recent resto and respray – see info further down)
- 5 previous owners (only really 4, the DVLA made me put it into my name when Granddad died) – Granddad has had it for about the last 25 years
- 134,000 miles
- Not currently MOT’d, insured or taxed – hasn’t really been used for about 4 years with covid and then Granddad falling ill with cancer. Has been stored under cover in the interim though
The good bits:
- ‘We’ have had it for a long time, and its had a lot of work done over the years. Granddad bought it as a bit of a wreck about 25 years ago from a farmer, and set about putting everything right over the remaining years.
- He was previously the owner of a VW main dealers, and looked after his vehicles really well. He wasnt always great at writing everything down, but they were generally 'over-looked-after' if anything. There are loads of receipts, and pics, even if you will struggle to work out what order they are supposed to be in!
- Was resto’d and resprayed about 4/5 years ago, by a friend of his, who has a bodyshop business. It was a ‘proper’ restoration, not a blow over – Granddad didn’t want the glass taking out, as he got weird about not being able to get a windscreen (I know you can get them – we had this conversation at the time, but he could be a nutter sometimes) but other than that was all done properly. I have pics of the whole process (as it was a mate who was doing it, and he knew Granddad was very ‘particular’ he took pics all along to show him) and there’s nothing to hide – Anyone interested is welcome to see them all!
- It has a fair few ‘nice to have’ bits that he had collected over the years at shows etc – Off the top of my head, Caravelle lights/grille, Caravelle wheels, opening quarter lights, captains seats up front, sliding rear windows – Probably more, I will add them as I think of them.
- Has Electric power steering retro fitted, and it makes low speed manouvering so much easier!
- It does have a (black) canavs load bed cover, but its seen better days. It would (probably) repair, but frankly with how good the body is, it deserves a new one!
The bad bits:
- The interior wants tidying, he never got to doing that bit. You can see in the pics, but there are 2 good condition T25 captains seats up front (albeit they could do with a good scrub) the back seats are from a transit, and while tidy, don’t match the fronts (there is a third one that you are welcome to, Granddad took it out as the dog used to lie by the rear door for long journeys). It is generally a bit tired and grubby in there basically.
- He had a weird thing that old people seem to do of trying to improve odd things that don’t need improving, and that mainly manifested in the dash on this – For some reason he added a second dash pod as some sort of 2nd glove box, and a load of weird ‘partitions’ on top of the dash. He also had an odd obsession with fitting Mk4 Golf Gamma radio/CD changers to inappropriate vehicles – he has done it to this (and his mk1 golf, and had one ready for his 412!) – That all wants doing because it looks weird, and like a mental person has been let loose in there!
- The water temp gauge/light has a mind of its own – from the second you tur the ignition it heads for the top
- The one headlight wants new adjusting clips fitting, as its loose, and I assume wouldn’t pass an MOT as is – Rumour says he bought a pack of them, and if I ever find them, the buyer is welcome to them, but that could be years away with the curse word he has piled up around the place!
- The wiring for the power steering has all been done properly, but not tidied away very well, that wants sorting as its the first thing the driver sees getting in
- Now this second it has a small water leak and the alternator belt is about to destroy itself. I will try and get those sorted.
The weird bits:
He intended on fitting an audi 5 cylinder engine into this (indeed we have a panel van with it all fitted and ready to go as his prototype, and 4 separate 5 cylinder engines in his yard to get rid of too!) and so he did a couple of modifcications to it ready to accept the engine. None of these are negatives, but they are odd, if you didn’t know that was his plan!
- The van has LPG fitted, as he planned on using it for the 5 cylinder. It works, was a professional install (it has a 70 or 80ltr tank in the cabin under the load bed) etc. Personally if I was keeping the boxer, I would probably pull all of this out, but it is there and works properly etc
- He also fitted the larger engine lid from a panel van into the load bay for better access when we swapped it – You wouldn’t actually know unless you knew (if you see what I mean) but it does make things easier to work on!
- Similarly, he made the rear body section behind the bumper removable (like a splitty) for easier access
- I was planning on keeping the reg, which was a private plate he bought (Jem was his nickname) – It will come with the original reg of A294YWP
Pics say a thousand words so…….
We have debated back and forwards whether to keep this, but as I say, he has already been gone a year, and we haven’t done anything with it yet, so I think its going to need to go.
Its not my van, and although I have used it from time to time (plus as he got older he didn’t love driving longer distances, so me or my brother would drive it to shows etc) I don’t know it as initimately as you know your own vehicle, but will do my best to answer anything you need. I am sure I will think of other stuff thats relevant as soon as I put the ad up!
It replaced his bay window single cab all that time ago, and I never thought he would love a pick up more than that one, but he ended up absolutely adoring the T25. It will genuinely be a massive wrench to see it go, but I am trying not to let sentiment mean it ends up falling apart on my drive.
It’s a cracking looking van, and very honest, but does need some TLC and MOTing etc, so I have tried to price it fairly. I figure if it was mint and the interior waa sorted etc its probably a £10k van, but that needs doing, plus it will need trailering away due to no MOT (and basically being unused for 4 years) etc so I figure £7000 sounds fair for it, but am open to offers (and opinions!) because really we need it gone sooner rather than later now.
Any questions, just shout - Dan
