I have this perverse attraction to the Metro at the moment.... really weird and I can't really get my head around why I like them! I usually go for big old barges... Of course it couldn't stay as standard if I did have one.... would really like to do a street sleeper, with something extremely fast under the lid ;D

Phew! so its not just me!!! I have been having pangs for one too, an A-series job as well! not even a decent k-series one. Lovely whiny 4-spd gearbox.
Do you know what else i've been pining for? An early subaru Justy and/or a petrol-engined Bedford CF van! Christ on a bike.

Spooky! I was thinking the exact same thing the other day... ...didn't want to tell anyone in case I was out-cast and forced to go to car re-hab! I was thinking one in this style: but finished in rattle-can black with limo tints (the more "bubbles" the better, perhaps with a mixture of alloys and steelies. Naturally under the bonnet would be a 1430 turbo lump, or silly k-series, with a nitrous kick.... just to wipe the smile off the face off the townie tw*ts who'd be guaranteed to laugh at me! ;D

What about a Honda B18 engine or Vauxhall XE?
If they go in a Mini they'll go in a Metro

If I had a metro it would have to be one of these.

Ah but the 6R4 wasn't really a Metro was it? Didn't they build them on a Maestro floor pan?
I like Metro's too. Sarah used to have a rather neat metalic purple one, good old retro purple velvet. Hers was one of the very first, november 1980 on the registration document IIRC. Don't think the K series ones count as retro, simply becuase they tried to make them look modern even though it was still essentially the same car underneath with a different front subframe popped in.
I've not really thought about it before, but wouldn't putting a bike engine in a FWD car be sort of diificult. I know you can get a diff to stick directly behind a transversely mounted bike engine, but even so wouldn't you end up with at least the headers sticking out of the grille?

You could mid-mount the bike engine ;D I get confused by early Metro styling - they seemed to run two different front ends at the same time - the one like in the pic I posted with the indicators incorporated in the light unit, and the ones with the sunken headlights . Then they went back to indicators in with the headlights Confuses the hell outta me! I'd like a very early one, preferably beige, and then stick a 1.8 VVC K-series under the lid ;D. I'm in a street sleeper phase at the moment!

Vauxhall LET or K-Series (with the VVC bits removed)...
I have a soft spot for street sleepers...My mate has a manky old Nova saloon with a Vauxhall XE under the bonnet...scarily fast.

The base models had seperate indicators inthe bumpers to begin with, the posher ones had them incorporated into the headlamps. "A British Car to beat the world"... When was the last time anyone ever saw a Metro "S"? They were part of the initial launch range, but I'm not sure that I've ever seen one! That's a really bad photo of me navigating for a friend in his 1.0 Metro, back in 1993 on a Road Rally. Our best year - we won a championship trophy! The scrutineers always laughed at us - "spectator parking's round the back mate" but you'd be surprised how many beefy Mk2 Escorts struggle for traction on icy hills where the Metro just sailed past ;D

You could mid-mount the bike engine ;D You could if you felt it was worth taking a (probably) rusty old metro. Cutting out the rear floor, making up mounts to take a subframe, building the subframe, bulkheading the rear section, yada yada yada. If you were going to go to that amount of trouble and cost you might as well space frame the whole lot and drop a serious performance lump in the back.

Put a 300bhp+ Suzuki Hayabusa engine in the middle with the original bodywork etc. and you'd have a proper Q-car.
