Hi all, apologies if a thread like this has been done to death but I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time and more importantly, Money!!! I'm currently looking at buying an old Dutton Melos, Its not 'standard' (I assume its not as standard anyway with an essex v6 fitted!) The current owner says it has no v5 or chassis/ VIN number. If I were to buy it i'd obvs. want to drive it on the road, not having the money for track/racing etc. But without any identification and given the fact it has probably graced the roads before, a) would I be able to regiseter it and b) if so what process would that be (i.e would it require an IVA because it has a bigger than standard engine etc. I'd be happy with a Q plate if it came to it, just to get it on the road! Ive tried to do a bit of research on Duttons, but It wasnt clear whether they came of a production line built= had some kind of type approval etc? or were litterally sold as kits to make up out of escort/ triumph bits? Any help here would be grateful Thanks Baz

no nothing at all apparently! the v5 you can say ok, someone might lose it, but if the vin/chassis number has been removed too, you've (i've!) got to ask why really I guess?!

alot of the the old dutton id and logbooks get put on new kit cars and hotrods. You will probably have to take it through a new iva test and get it up to modern standards to pass

Dutton owners club Facebook page is where to ask this - sounds like it has been a victim of identity theft. If the DOC can identify the car from records they keep around these issues then you may be able to get the identity back.
No ID and no proof and it will need BIVA which will cost more than the car is worth to achieve. Better to buy a car with the correct documents. Dutton is a kit car never designed to pass an approval process so loads of work needed for BIVA. All the info and requirements of BIVA is available on-line .GOV as is the manual and costs etc. Lots of reading to do.
There are the SVA failure sheets for a Melos kicking about on the web somewhere - I think it was 3 A4 sheets - typically a well built kit will fail on 2 or 3 silly items.
If ending up with the BIVA route then put the effort into something more worthwhile.

Yes, indeed, thanks Dickie and Darkspeed, you have confirmed my worst thoughts that actually qualifying & registering it for the road + transportation/ restoration costs would amount to more than what the car is ever going to be worth, sadly even in a restored state! all the best and thanks again, B
