Curious.... As I breifly mentioned within a previous post; on an episode of Police Interceptor or Traffic Cops; a motorist was stopped and it was discovered there was no MOT, which apparently invalidated the car insurance.
So, where do we stand with a car thats declared SORN, on private land, in a garage or on a private driveway, either in the process of restoration or just a pipe dream but still insurred.
Should it be stolen, set on fire. parts stolen or vandalised .... would an insurance payout be declined because it's regarded as not being road legal, thus no valid MOT Cert and or Road Tax(excise duty) ?

looking at my insurance documents, there are no exclusions mentioning MOT or VED, only that the vehicle should have MOT "IF REQUIRED"
you don't need an MOT test cert if its off the road.
Not having a valid certificate does not invalidate your Insurance, however they may well not pay out if damaged on the road, where a valid certificate is required.
(again, not required when declared off the road, or when under 3 years old, OR, when driving to/from a place of repair or a Pre booked MOT Test.)

Down the the terms and conditions of your policy. But If the car is worth any appreciable amount you should at least have layup insurance, unless you can afford to lose it. If the car is garaged this is a pittance, typically £100 or so.

A question for your insurance company . 👍 It may well be but I was hoping to hear other members opinions and knowledge based on their personal experiences and understanding.

When i made enquiries for temporary day insurance to drive a vehicle, I was told by Temp Cover, the vehicle must be road legal to used their cover; stating, if due to legislation the vehicle requires a valid MOT Certificate, than a current and valid MOT must be in place, they also said the vehicle must be Taxed.
I read other online opinion which say MOT and Road Tax have no bearing on the Insurance, then there the clip on the TV show which stated no MOT invalidates insurance.
When i made enquiries in regard to laid up insurance, the insurance companies, I contacted, at the time, said there was technically no such cover, premiums are just calculated on the lowest mileage option available and if parked away from home address, then the vehicle is treated as being parked elsewhere and away from home.
So I'm curious in regard to a vehicle declared as SORN, off road, with insurance in place whilst SORN`ed but no MOT and whether a forum member as ever been such a predicament when making a claim .
There're lots o caveats within insurance policies, which we're ignorant to. A personal experience years ago, I was in a vehicle towing a car with A frame, the Police stopped van driver for whatever reason, which lead to a to check to see whether the Insurance covered towing, which luckily as it was a hire van with a towing hitch, it did.
There was also another TV programme, which stated, if you have not got Commuting included within your Insurance Policy and you have an Accident whilst on your way to or from work, then you're not covered by your Insurance, whether the Police can also impose a penalty as well, I don't know.
Thus, I'm curious.

The key phrase is where legally required, so you can take it for an MOT, or use it if it's exempt etc, you also don't need an MOT to park it in a garage so it could also be covered to.
I'm sure some of the classic specialists advertise laid up and parts insurance, I'd ring around a few.
