Last year was my first visit to RRG and was encouraged by my good friend and neighbour, Phil, to make some sort of transport for toilet trips and other ventures around the campsite. After careful consideration I decided on a barstool racer and created the handful below The Honda GX160 engine with torque converter allowed alot of fun popping wheelies whilst sat a metre in the air. Between our small group we had quite the variety of transport So this year its time for something different, Phil is already well on his way with the mini mini scamp but watch this space for the transport to follow the barstool racer........

Do You have a better pic of that wheel ie bin barrow thing at the end of the row? Done before, but never seen with that bin barrow upright which makes it look a bit like one of those egg chairs.

This is the best pic I've got of it, it's a wheel barrow turned on its end

Wheel barrow, that was the term! Sorry. Okay, it would take a kid or a dwarf to make it look like an egg chair. Thanks for that pic. Other wheel barrows as a pennance:

So the build of the follow on for the barstool racer has started and taking shape already I'm hoping to use some of this sort of stuff to make it look old but cool Let's see if this ends up like I planned........

Well I'm making progress and managed to do some more stuff on what is now called the ammo box racer. After a bit more welding and grinding it time to see if the ammo box will fit. First things first, cut a big hole in it To mount the ammo box, Phil came to the rescue with some rivnuts. Time to get drilling! Unfortunately the rivets don't sit flush so time to open up the holes on the ammo box. Penny washers will do a grand job of holding it down With the ammo box now fitted there's the sudden realisation of how am I going to fit everything in. I knew it would be tight but there's tight and super tight! Height is also an issue, particularly with the air filter. Nothing a hacksaw can't sort out Let's see if I can get it all to fit and work.....

Love it
It's even better/tighter in the flesh.
Show us a render (preferably one that isn't skewed by the software 😜 )

Here's the sexy renders of what it should look like when finished

With a custom build comes a set of challenges, particularly when you decide to shoe horn everything into an ammo box. I'd figured out where most things would fit but the air filter was going to be a problem. The standard air filter was just too tall and aftermarket air filters would stick out too far and wouldn't fit. So this presented a dilemma of what to do.........well make your own of course! I trimmed down the original air intake and smoothed out the internals, fitted some foam and screwed on the nice shiny mesh on top Just needs a lick of paint but pretty happy with the results

How you gonna cool the thing? Surely it’ll get red hot in there

How you gonna cool the thing? Surely it’ll get red hot in there Absolutely loving this thing. I thought about the heating element of the build. But the Buick style vents, and possibly another hidden vent under or behind the Jerry can, and a custom top vent, exiting along the rear of the seat base will allow for enough distraction. The other thing I thought was that these motors possibly can be run at high ambient temperatures.

How you gonna cool the thing? Surely it’ll get red hot in there Not wanting to speak for Ian, but hey, I'm going to The whole bottom of the kart is open These engines run stationary, so movement will help We've discussed raising the seat base up say 10mm and cutting out the area above the engine - this by far should make the biggest difference The pull starter is no longer needed, they're designed to pull air in through the holes in the pull start casing. We could rejig this to make an external vent that the fan pulls through I think all these together should be fine... maybe

Yeh I saw the vents, it just seems quite a lump in quite a small space. I guess at the end of the day it’s not gonna do 10’000 miles a year is it.

I'm not sure them vents will be up to much cop to be honest I'm sure with the seat raised allowing heat to escape and the pull start venting to outside so it's pulling in fresh air it will be fine. I think leaving it to drag already hot air in will be it's downfall. Just means making up some sort of vent and tubing in an already tight space You can already buy these plates for go karts that remove the pull starter and have a hole in for an external starter, so venting from that hole should be easy enough

It'll need something to help cool it but I want to avoid putting holes in the ammo box if possible. I've got a few ideas that I need to draw up and see what would work best.
As Phil said, I'll lift the seat and put some holes/ducting underneath it to let hot air out. The bottom is open so it should allow some air in but I might be able to fit some sort of duct to force air in when it's travelling forwards
Watch this space.........

Looking great so far. When you welded on the brackets for the front stub axles did you lean them back a bit to give some castor so the steering will self center?

The brackets for the stub axle haven't got any castor, mainly because they are angled to balance the camber and I didn't fancy working out a compound angle. I did the same on the barstool racer and seemed to be ok
