This is so awesome! When I read the title today I was like "wait he just got it on the road, now a MX5 swap?" Then after reading I realised you're catching up with the story Thank you for taking the time, it's a good and interesting read. Your skills improved so much, really cool to see. Good luck with everything and keep us updated! Max

So after doing lots of research when I realised the 323 front bowl sump didn't have a dipstick tube I had to do some digging to figure out where it goes on the 323 as the mx5 dipstick tube was in the sump. Found out that I need a 323 oil pump as the dipstick tube was in them. Took me a while to find a pump with the tube still intact and believe me I searched lots or different parts diagrams etc but couldn't find any new so just bought the unit second hand. But what I did discover is that the 1600bp mazda 121/322f also shares the same pump. And it was when I was told my ally sump could not be welded I came back to these diagrams with an idea. Matching part numbers with the 1600 mx5 sump gaskets for the half moon part. Steel sump check. Front bowl check. 1600/1800 compatability nope! The 1800 is 20something mm longer than the 1600 but it shares the same components sump gaskets oil pumps etc so I took the risk to buy a 121 steel sump. And I'm going to extend it 22mm longer until it fits my engine. Marrying it up to the windage tray from my 1800 all the studs line up so it should be just a case of extending the sump. Then I'll be very happy as I'll now have a steel sump i can chop up myself. And beef it up where needed so it tucks nice and high. The ally sump wouldn't of lasted 5 minutes but with the steel sump I should be able to shape it how I want and give it lots of clearance and beef up where needed. This makes me happy as I like to drag the frame and ally sumps give me anxiety. Just thought id share as it may help others. More on this once the engines back out

As I write this I am reminded how I chose the mx5 engine because it was cheaper to buy an mx5 engine than to bore out the standard 1600 engine to 1800. I'm coming close to 5x that price now with the mx5 engine haha! But damn I can't wait to hear it!! Danstengineering Bmw kr1000 ITB kit. Just need to figure out how to fuel it but I'm not going to think about that right now because the notepad in my brain is already overwhelmed I'm just waiting on some metal so I can start building the bulkhead and gearbox/exhaust tunnel back up!

Thanks for all the lovely replies it really means a lot.
I stayed away from the car for a week as my metal hadn't turned up still. Its been a week now. How frustrating.
Anyway a friend called me yesterday and said he has a present for me sat in the back of the car so I collected it and damn I can get some work done again!!

The present was some 1.2mm thick sheet metal!! Let's get back to work then!! Got to work on the bulkhead. Then used some 1.5mm for the centre section and cut out a hole for the wiring grommet. I'm actually really happy with that. Tapered it in to make it look less out of place. Wasn't planning on doing this until the engine was out but in a bit of a catch 22. I can't take the engine out until the gearbox and exhaust tunnel is built so I know I have good clearance as its very tight under there. And i can't do the tunnel without a bulkhead. Now I have a bulkhead we can continue with the tunnel Happy with that. But feeling the strength of the section I've just done here compared to the middle box section of the tunnel I've decided to replace just that middle section with some thicker metal.as I need to relocate the shifter there and also mount a handbrake somewhere. That's tomorrow's job as I have the next 2 nights off work Thanks guys

Wow, just binge-read the entire thread, great work. Massive props to you for taking it all on yourself and learning while you go. That MX5 engine looks like it makes 250bhp just sat there with the 4-2-1 manifold and ITBs Look forward to seeing it up and running!

Thanks again for all the lovely replies. I'm really enjoying watching my skills improve. Had a few hours of graft last night. Been struggling for motivation lately. Bit of CAD for the clutch slave cylinder clearance. At this stage it's all tacked together until the engines removed. Happy with that. Now need to box the other side with room for the exhaust also
