the mg has finally been out on its first test drive , the guy selling it has already taken it 50 miles and identified some more fuel pipes to replace and one of the carbs is sticky. which is all now a moot point as my life is now on hold …… just been told my job is in consultancy review to be made redundant ! bit of a kick in the teeth i jointed this company after 33 years with BT/openreach and thought i at least had 5 -7 years before our fibre optic build was complete. so i have less than 2 months before i will be out of work… told the wife to cancel our california trip in August and i let the guy know the purchase of the car will also not be going ahead .. gutted to say the least . That's pants. I've just spent three months with the redundancy axe hanging over my head but have found another job thankfully. Hope you have a similar happy ending.

Hope it goes well for you. I was in that position twice in my working life. Having a skill paid dividends, I was only out of work for a week in total.

Bu99er
Really sorry to see this.
Sucks big time, whichever way we look at it.
Firstly, if in consultation, hope you survive, and if it is just a formality they are processing, then I hope you find something sooner than later.

Firstly, if in consultation, hope you survive, and if it is just a formality they are processing, then I hope you find something sooner than later. i have had a look today and it was depressing not much out there as a lot of other telecom companies have made big job cuts this last few months. i have a feeling that they have names in the bag already and they are just ticking the employment law boxes. one thing is 112 from 190 people being axed i now know my dept. of 12 will be cut to 8. however it will not be the same job title /role as they are chopping out levels of management and dumping a lot more responsibility into the laps of those left so if i do get a reprieve which i won’t k ow till after the 45 days review/consultancy starting next monday by which time i would have been to california and bought an Mg but will carry on with worst case scenario and cancel the trip and the car so i have some back up financially at least for a few months.

so looks like i have kept my job although officially confirmed in a weeks time.
lot of stress for nothing ,as it seems they wanted rid of layers of management!and lumped us into the culling session but most people doing my job are ok , 1 guy gone in glasgow as we have stopped building there.
so what does this mean car wise ?
well funny thing is i gave (long term loaned ) a micro k11 away a couple of years back to my mate who now doesn’t want it due to not being ULEZ compliant.
it’s been kept in my name on the v5c in fact i have been paying insurance and tax on it! with not a lot of return(what are friends for ?)
so it means i can apply for the scrappage scheme as the car is still mot’d and insured which are part of the new rules which means i can get £2k hopefully for the car fingers crossed.
so wish me luck , with £2k from that very nice man Khan 🤬🤬 i think i will be allowed another £2k max from the pot so the search will be back on , whether that happens this year next depends what pops up for sale.
not sure an mgb gt is still on the list as at that budget the cars are definitely a little less solid , although i had bought some bits already for the previous expected purchase.
recent ad’s have shown quite few singers, hillman and sunbeams of the early /mid 60’s and i still won’t discount anything that’s within budget like the heralds etc.previously mentioned.
have even seen some porsche 924/924S in that price range too to go modern classic
so watch this space it could at last be the time to buy my first classic.

I thought the scrappage scheme gave you £2k towards a new car ? That’s how it worked last time .
Happy days if it gives you £2k towards any car .
Glad about your job . It’s not a good way of doing things , puts everyone in a bad place when there’s no real need .

Great news regarding your job.
Really pleased for you.
I know we spoke last week, but I have not put it in my thread, but we have had our portfolio enlarged, more work, and cautious word from the boss says till December.
It does not mean much, but at least I can come back from America, still in a job.
As mentioned, I guess you need to establish just what and how the money is to be spent.
We touched on that Rover P6 already.
Once you have a dream short list, make it known, often stuff is for sale without being advertised, like my Rockit.

moved from here forum.retro-rides.org/thread/223837/first-classic-wanted thanks for any replies on that thread i have edited my post slightly to fit in here Hey guys I’ll be in a position to buy a classic in the next few months i’m cashing in a very small pension that isn’t doing anything so thought i’d treat myself I have been riding motorbike for some years but sitting astride/bent over motorbikes is making me ache these days the bigger belly doesn’t help either! not had an older car as such since i had a beetle,mk1/2 escort, fiat 127, viva in the 80’s but of course they were not of an age to be classed as classics more old bangers ha ha Just putting feelers out there to see what may be coming up for sale in the next few months Quite open to what it is but herald/A40 farina/ mgb gt/ moggy minor have been on my radar and is more or less my final wish list No full on projects i just do not have time for one of those seriously can’t get into welding etc… don’t mind non-standard at all i.e. engine swap etc i’ll probably lightly mod what ever i buy anyway hopefully in the style of the cafe racer thread. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/168437/cafe-racers-british-style-cars so if anyone has any experience of the above cars pros/cons etc it would be good to hear. thanks Mark Blue……. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225740426199?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=-ZYTRV21RWa&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=-ZYTRV21RWa&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=MORE

something i have never really thought of what could possibly go wrong for £3.5k 🤣 it keeps popping up on a search .. daimler V8 rolling resto project ? it’s running , driving , had the brakes overhauled needs banded steels , some race numbers painted down the side and lowering slightly 😍 oh and left ratty looking showed my brother who then says his mate has a MK2 Jag that is cleaner but needs paint as it’s in primer for the same sort of money. think i may need to go check these out

Sounds like it could be great but check out the structure carefully these things can really rot and are not easy to fix.

Yep, rear spring sockets are the major thing for complicated rot. The markers on the front wings too. Door bottoms always go too but are straightforward.
I’d probably go for the jag over the Daimler. It’s worth more in any condition, and the engines are a bit less fragile and parts are more available.
