TLDR - How/where can I verify the necessary details to have a weight plate made up please when starting with nada
Bonjour,
Having asked the DVSA this question but receiving a reply along the lines of "I don't know", I'm hoping someone here may be able to provide something more useful by ways of reply!
"I'm looking at buying a second-hand trailer, but several I have seen do not have a weight plate fitted, and have little/no information which could be used to have one made up. How/where can I verify the necessary details to have a weight plate made up please, or, how can I demonstrate that the trailers were built pre-1982 and therefore do not require one (where applicable)?"
One thing I did manage to establish is that the requirement for trailers to have a VIN number was introduced in 2012 - leaving me with the follow up question of how can you evidence that a pre-82 trailer was indeed built prior to 1982...?
It'll be a small (<750kg) trailer and I'll likely only use it once so it's not the end of the world, but a) I'd like to do it right if possible and b) I'm intrigued!
Ta in advance Rob

Hi, can't help with the query but if its only a small trailer and you aren't planning to massivly overload it I can't see the police having any issues with it as long as the tyres are good, the lights work and it has your number plate on it. Most of the smaller old trailers in use that i've seen have issues with a least one of these three.

Hi, I can make a couple of observations. If it was built before '82 it probably wouldn't have had a weight plate. So how can you prove a negative thing? If it's less than 750kgs it can be unbraked, if it's unbraked it must be less than 750kgs. As said they will just look at tyres, number plate and lights. As long as it looks presentable they probably won't be interested. This is in no way definitive. However you could just look for any weight markings on the hitch, the axle and the tyre weight rating to satisfy yourself.

It's not down to you to prove it, let them prove it.

Thank you all, I feel suitably reassured now! I'll not be doing anything daft so it'll be presentable and hopefully something of nothing
Was just equally curious what the process would be in the backwards world of the DVLA should such an issue ever occur, but we may never know

Ta in advance Rob Trailers without plates use the total of the TYRE LOAD RATINGS to determine the MAM. A rating of 66 on 4 tyres would give a MAM of 1200 kgs. So no plate that's what VOSA would do
