This body style was only made for 2 years, 78-79. As a young man, I had a few of these. This one belongs to a buddy and he wanted to give it modern power. So he sent it to my house.
First I had to make the original 6.6L engine run until I could get to it.
(someone had painted it very poorly and sold it to him online)
No brakes, barely ran- but for the snow states- this one came from out west and was solid.

More on this GEN3 coyote swap as it happens. It's also getting a replacement interior, along with a 4 inch full off road suspension lift. YeeeeeeHaaww!

The old 400cid engine didn't sound bad, but the ignition system was junk. I temporarily wired it so that I could move it about until I was ready to get it torn apart. It made relatively low power- 260BHP and good torque for it's age- a reported 400+lb ft. But at 6mpg and the temperment of "Will it stay running today" just wasn't what he wanted. Not to mention he had a bit of buyer's remorse because he spent more than he should've. I said "Well old buddy- In for a penny, in for a pound!" And here we are...

Oh boy! I need to update this one... It has also evolved into a full 6 inch suspension lift with upgraded axles... I've got a busy week ahead!

I've always liked the look of these things. I'd expect them to hog the juice a bit but 6mpg? Even allowing for the fact that your gallons are only 0.8 imperial gallons that's appallingly bad. My old Bedford 5-tonner used to do 10.

Epic stuff! Love these body style Broncos!
Picked up a 69 F100 not so long back with a 360FE lump in it, that does on the nose £1 per mile on fuel haha such a lazy motor, but it runs sweet as a nut!
Keen to see more on this, would love to get my hands on a Coyote motor at some point to swap into my Maverick.

High lifts do zip for me, but I can admire them as a thing.
Sleepers, unusual, and unexpected builds like this work for me.
Watching, as always.

I've been wrenching on a bunch of stuff but if you'd like to see the progress on the very old & tired 1979 1/2 ton ford axles- here's the latest build video. Thanks for watching, should you choose to view. Cheers!

Ok, so the Bronco is almost finished. It's going to a dyno tuner in a few days, then off to proper paint & body for the final details, fit & finish. It's got a Gen III Coyote 5.0L with a 10spd auto and electronic transfer case. For 9in rear end and a dana 44 front. It's had every inch of of the suspension rebuilt/replaced/upgraded with Duff Tuff 6" suspension lift and diff gears to match the 10spd & big 37" wheel size (when they actually go on the truck).

Interior is assembled and functioning, lots of little details left to do like programming the digital dash, rear glass wiring- but it sould be done and on it's was home any day now! This one was a LOT of work for one guy. I mean, exhausted bloody knuckle throw the spanner out the window type work. It's ok, I'm almost done with my part. I have more upcoming craziness. I'll post as they begin ............

Will watch this later! See a lot of conversion with the 10 speeds lately. How is that conversion wired up, modified OE components or aftermarket?
