Hi all, Wondered if I could pick you knowledgable lots brains! I'm staring at a huge pile of parts in need of blasting, as well as a few chassis spots that could do with cleaning up as I embark back on the restoration of my VW van. It would be so useful to be able to blast a few areas I can't get mechanical abrasives into. Has anyone used one of the Sealey sandblasting guns? If so are they any good? What's the best media to use? They look nice and compact (I don't have room for a cabinet) and being able to dump the intake pipe into a bucket rather than a bulky container appeals. I have a feeling the downfall may be my compressor... it's a 50LTR 9.6 CFM 2.5HP unit. I'm ok with it slowing work up a bit and having to wait for it to catch up if I can get away with it...or is it destined to be as useful as a choco teapot? Any help is much appreciated

That gun and compressor will be great for cleaning up your 1:10 scale models. And you'll still spend more time sweeping up the blasting medium than you will using it. You will spend even more time removing blasting grit form your bed, cooker and underwear drawer.

I've got one. It's OK, but it's not great. Biggest problem I found was that the pickup pipe continually clogged up - it got so bad that I replaced it with a transparent pipe so that I could see where the blockage was and try to clear it without having to dismantle everything.

I'm not quite sure why they even make them as they are completely useless.
Big rules of blasting is, Unless you have professional equipment them pay someone who does!

In your opinion Plenty peeps, myself included have small blast cabinets that work perfectly well for what we use them for. It's all down to what your expectations are and what your trying to achieve. Not much good for large items and heavy duty rust removal, but perfectly good for smaller lighter work. The media you use, the gun & air pressure/volume can make a big difference to the results depending on what your trying to achieve. Mine does everything I want and has done for 15+ years

I think its fairly factual that unless your time is worthless it's better to pay someone than struggle along with the wrong equipment for the job. It's not exactly a pleasurable job is it?? Problem is most people don't have the experience to relise just how slow and inappropriate for the job their little compressor and suction cabinet usually is.

Still only your opinion, not everyone has the same opinion. Personally I find using the blast cabinet quite therapeutic my time isn't worthless when it comes to work, but this is a hobby so its free. I'd much rather do these myself than pay someone to do it for me Horses for courses, as I said it depends on what your expectations are and what trying to achieve. If I wanted a bodyshell, body panels, large items or a bulk load doing I'd pay to get it done, small stuff is easy done myself 😎 In the OP's case he doesn't have room for a cabinet, blasting without a cabinet is extremely messy (even with a cabinet it can be messy without a decent extraction system) he has a lot to get done so in his place I'd pay to get done.

Thanks for all of the help guys, useful reading!
I think I might give this a miss then. I'd still like a blast cabinet for smaller bits but it sounds like my compressor just isn't going to cut the mustard as I suspected.
Knot wheels and abrasives it is!

jimi That's very impressive work. What media are you blasting with in those photos?
