Hi everybody I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a random tool i have in my workshop. A friend gave it to me with a few other odds and ends. Any ideas what it is, what is used for ect. The bottom part winds out as you turn the dial. As you can see its a good manufacturer

It is a type of micrometer but for a specific job. What that is ,is the only way to find out.

The names on the micrometer sections are manufacturer names of the micrometers not what they are fitted to. The Marconi nameplate is likely to be more useful in identifying them. They seem to be to do with microwave communication equipment, possibly for testing/calibration?

I read standing wave detector on that catalogue page. A standing wave is a term used in acoustics.

Standing wave is a term used in many different fields 😉
Looking at some of the pics, the bits look similar to stuff I've seen on KU band microwave dishes which were used offshore for satellite communications. (Not that I know much about them other than odd bits of info picked up from assisting field service engineers working on them )

Where they were based in that part of Hertfordshire you had Marconi and GEC avionics as well as British Aerospace amongst others. There was plenty going on with microwave guidance for landing systems, Satellite coms, guidance and other systems. Lots of interesting MOD and civil contracts around there at the time.

Standing wave is a term used in many different fields 😉 Oh really? I only came across that term in a german article about an old beetle with a big sound system. It said the round shaped beetle shell is perfect to prevent a standing wave.

Just adding my Ha'peth, Marconi were and had some of the best tool makers in the world, they made electronic radio valves for everything and needed to made to exacting standards, measuring equipment would regularly be measuring in "Tenths", meaning tenths of a thousandths of an inch,

Not sure exactly what they do but would guess they are some sort of fine tuning adjustment when used with the kit in the picture. The horns send and receive RF signals. These travel in the rectangular holes to sensors so would think that by changing the rectangular hole size it would alter the frequency.
