Long time since I’ve been on here, nothing amazing to report since doing the scimitar. Today a friend had his Audi A6 hit in the rear arch/ bumper by a lady that pulled out of a junction. Damage is slightly bent arch, scratches on the wheel, arch and bumper, it’s not bad but the reality is the insurance will want to write it off. They have said they’ll be in touch tomorrow to take it for assessment, and for him to remove his possessions. I know there have been several threads on here, but can’t find them. I have said don’t let them take it, and have it assessed at home or take it somewhere, as he will not see it again. It’s a tidy car, just motd, but book value will be £1500 I’d guess. I’m sure he can demand to have it fixed etc, but can any of you guys give me some pointers please? Thanks 😀

My advice would be don’t let them take it away if he wants any chance of keeping/buying it back .
It’s a whole lot easier while he’s still in possession of it .

Do not let them take it away, they can assess it where it is. If your not at fault and it's repairable then you can (or could at least) demand it is repaired. They will tell you lots of nonsense about why they cant do that though.
Main issue might be if it's an Aluminium shell (I know some Audis were) then they will try there very hardest to write it off as I cant see it being a cheap repair

Great, I was pretty sure that was the case. It’s not aluminium, and it’s superficial damage, copart have even emailed him already!!

I’ll add here that he’s very capable of fixing it himself. My thoughts are keep the car on his land, get it seen and try to get the best offer, buy it back, fix it and forget it happened

DO NOT let them take it and don’t trust them Just my opinion of car insurance companies Full of talk about what they can do for you And when A claim arises they try every avenue to give you a pittance Tell them to inspect it and offer a figure and tell them you will be keeping the car end of, that is your right

From recent experience the insurance idnustry use a computer system to assess repair costs. They select the make and model and graphic of the car comes up they then select the area and select repair or replace and the computer spits out a cost.
On your mate's car the insurance will decide that's an uneconomical repair if as you say it books at £1500ish as insurance will see that as extensive repair to wing and repair /replace bumper cover.Labour costs are the killer. It will be cheaper for them to write off and pay him than repair.
Caveat- I am basing this on recent experience but on a newer car.

I have heard recently that insurance co's are repairing more, rather than writing stuff off due to the current situation with the used car market. However I'd agree with the 'don't let them take it' approach, even if it's just 'so we can get an estimate' 😱

Absolutely do not let them take it! Also, you're dealing with the party who hit you's insurance company, not your own, right? They cannot write your car off, no matter how much they might want to, as it's not 'theirs' to write off. You can Absolutely specify where you want it repaired, and you can also specify that you need a hire car until it's done. Which then gives them the impetus to actually get it sorted, because it's costing them more money every day. Insurance companies on that island are basically legalised thieves, and you're going to be paying more for the next five years regardless of your innocence, so play them at their own game.

Brilliant! Thanks guys! He’s going to have a conversation with them in the morning and tell them it’s not going anywhere. I’ll keep you posted 😀

Pretty sure you can’t ‘insist’ you have a hire car. I have had exactly that scenario & ended up NOT having a hire car because the insurance would not pay for it. I looked into it & many others have been bitten on the backside with this same issue

He’s absolutely not fused on a hire car as he has 2 other vehicles. He rang the insurance today and made his point he wants it assessed at home or take to local repair place, the fobbed him off and said as copart were booked to pick it up he’d have to speak to them, he got transferred across directly (strange?) They then said it wasn’t their responsibility and to speak to his insurance again. Considering he was 46 in the queue, and took half an hour to answer, he gave up and decided to call after work, only to find out they close at 5 😡

Sounds like it is under control.
As said, don't let them take it away.
There is a chance they'll repair that, with the used car market being high, and the fact that newer cars are hard to come by. If anything, the hire car charge costs may be what write it off.

Me and a friend experienced all this recently. Don’t pull your punches in telling them to f-k right off. They’re already counting the pennies they’ll get from copart before you’ve agreed to anything. They are absolute shysters and are NOT on your side.
I can’t say too much as it’s not my story to tell, but my friend got motorclaimguru to handle his case and got a far more satisfactory resolution than he could ever have got himself. We’re talking 50% more than the initial offer AND the car back as salvage (which is where I came in, I broke it for him). This was on a car worth the best part of £20k though, and realistically it wouldn’t be worth his involvement on a sub £5k car.

Hthe fobbed him off and said as copart were booked to pick it up he’d have to speak to them, he got transferred across directly (strange?) That suggests they already have decided they are wanting to write it off before it's been "assessed" If they cant take it away they might start and talk a bit.
