Thanks for this. Do you know if its a solid tyre or something else? I cannot work out for the life of me what its made from. Almost looks like a tyre worn down to the cords. Edit: In fact a closer look would suggest its made out of offcuts of old tyres stacked together? It is a solid, laminated tire. I don't know specifically what they're made from, but I do know that they are speed-limited to about 15 mph, after that they fly apart from heat.

Morning gang. Last day here. Another restless night, stressing about stuff I really cannot do much about, like the whole redundancy thing. Pack tonight, airport tomorrow fly out overnight, back Friday , hopefully by midday. Back to Toms scrapyard in Miami, Oklahoma…… Tom is half Indian, and an interesting guy. It is one of the last surviving walk around, pick what you want, call “Slim” to move it about, unbolt and load it for you, kinda places. Between Clem and Joe, they spent over $800.00 on the parts they wanted. -rices vary, but Tom is a hard man, he owns a load of properties, and also runs 4 fleamarket stalls where he sells the front ends off the trucks he cuts up. The bench seat Clem bought, needs work nd reupholstering, but it was only $25.00 The tractor grills, though very different, were $100.00 each. I did spend some money too. Bought some parts to be able to assemble a chainsaw for Dennis when I got to Clems workshop. This was the load we got onto Clems truck. And no, not vaguely interested in the vintage, rusted out Jeep. I don’t care for 4x4 at all.

In the evening, Kim cooked Steaks, Sausages and made us Salads. As a Texan who loves cooking and food, she is an amazing, and intuitive cook. Gus…… Loves his truck. Loves humans….. nice ones. Off to breakfast and to collect a few bits, plus deliver Joe’s parts from the previous day. Recognise this car….? So much badge engineering, and booted versions of European cars around in the USA. Pancakes and Bacon. After breakfast, we headed out to Joes place to drop off stuff and collect a BB Gun for Bryans son Gavin. More interesting stuff to see Town was full because it was football season kick off weekend. So we generally avoided the busy places. Even at 09.00 the television sets were set up on the backs of trucks, as were BBQ’s for all the tailgating parties. This is an interesting city/town that has the university and student life, but also developing fast with businesses coming into the area, creating a massive metropolitan area. Old Gas station now a large indoors/outdoors restaurant and pub, serving them students, clem and some friends went there once, waited forever to be served, then could not order the second round of 2 for one drinks. Still makes for interesting photos, and also, as Clem says, their transgressions of local planning permission creates precedents for others to enable development and building that historically was not permitted. Stopping,at Joes, we ended up picking him up, driving over to Rogers, a town nearby where his dad lives and his car hoard is parked out. He has so many interesting cars, and also a hoard of 30 Land Cruisers from when nobody wanted them. He worked for Toyota all his life. His luck, his vision to have a load of Land Cruisers. He had offered me a camper van too, no price discussed, but it is not interesting enough, and the interior does not appeal to me. After this Clem, Gus and I headed out for shopping for the ball game later in the day. The No-No Camper.

So back to the chainsaw build. When we were at Tom’s yards, I saw a pile of hacksaw frames, walking around there was a lot of chain lengths scattered, hanging and laying about. So I asked Tom how much for the one rusty frame…… “You can take it” he said after I told him the plan. Next job was to find the right size chain, not easy. As they are mostly large link, or wire chains for animals. But I found a short, damaged length. Asked Tom how much…… “That’ll be a Dollar to you” was his reply. Back home, mid washed off them. Into the workshop, in the sandblasting cabinet, cleaned the, links, then cut to size. I chose not to weld it together, but just to tension it as a blade would be. Given two coats of satin clear to retain the look. Job done. Gave it to Dennis when I got back, he loved it and hung it up in the gas station. Perfect.

So jealous of all these cool places you're visiting! If you happen to stumble upon a Cortez I would be very interested to know where it is and how likely I could beg / borrow / swap / buy parts from it!

grizz I know this might be off the beaten path for you but
$1,800 ono - a mere hop, skip and a jump from you... only about 1,600 miles or so to Tracy, California... you know you want to
If only I had the wherewithal to import this into New Zealand. Thoroughly enjoying this thread Grizz. Please keep it coming.

I have chums all over who are amazed how easy it is to do certain things here, and some TBF who see things ridiculous here.
But on my little road trip I stayed with friends along the way. For one, I had to leave my car at his work and him drive me to his house as he isn't allowed to have visitors cars outside his house. Seriously. ANother I had to send him measurements of the LTD to ensure that it would fit on his drive as cars have to sit behind a certain line behind the pavement on the drive. A friend who got drinking with me and forgot to take the flag down at sunset as required, and thought he would get fined if anyone had seen and reported him....
I don't think I could live in a US city. That kind of thing would drive me INSANE
That's just the Home Owners Association (H.O.A.) of planned community developments. Those are "tiny" (I'm using tiny loosely here) pockets of housing areas, so that doesn't quite count. If anyone thinking of moving to the U.S. (and I know you'd have a retro-ride here), you'd want to make sure that the home you have doesn't have an H.O.A/HOA as they are control freaks. As such, they may not allow your projects on site at your own home. What's worse, is they make you pay a fee every year, or quarterly, to the HOA Board so they don't fine you for not towing the HOA rules and regulations.

Don't you just love the simplicity and madness of it well done mate LOL…… I mam glad I caught you out mate, it had to happen to one of us. I’m another one enjoying this trip! What have they done to the MGB!! Cut it into sections! Looks like an early pull handle one. My one is still in one piece though luckily! Scrapyard collects scrap. I suspect this was the case. Like the Willys on the trailer. You have one? No pics? You need to read between the lines mate. Maybe I will send you a pic of Kelly kissing me on messenger. You owe her. Thanks, I appreciate that, if Kelly's ever in my neck of the woods tell her dinners on me. I told her when you messaged it at Ethyls, she just laughed. But appreciated your offer. So jealous of all these cool places you're visiting! If you happen to stumble upon a Cortez I would be very interested to know where it is and how likely I could beg / borrow / swap / buy parts from it! No mate, Also never looked for one. But you can rest assured, someone will have one stashed, somewhere. grizz I know this might be off the beaten path for you but $1,800 ono - a mere hop, skip and a jump from you... only about 1,600 miles or so to Tracy, California... you know you want to If only I had the wherewithal to import this into New Zealand. Back to reality.

Dennis made the same comment about HOA’s being a total bunch of xxxxx’s I guess we all travel and experience stuff differently. The America I choose to travel is still fairly open and unrestricted. Like the house Andy is building for Carol. No planning permission, but a ton of common sense.
