Maybe I've been watching too much Overhaulin' today... maybe I'm just getting restless, but I'm really feeling the desire for a car with shiny paint and chrome. I used to think that running a battered car was easier - but it isn't in a lot of ways. I still have keep a hold on the rust on the outer panels, making sure that the rust doesn't turn to rot (a few holes are appearing ). I still have to keep the chassis structure sound and rot free. I still need to keep everything mechanically in good health. Basically the only difference between running a shiny showy car and running a beater is that I don't have to wax it and I don't care if anyone dents it. I'm not wanting a show car - I definitely couldn't be doing with cowering in the garage at the slightest suggestion of rain and keeping the engine bay surgically clean. But something with a cool paintjob, sexy shiny rims and some special interior treatment is really floating my boat at the moment. No real purpose for this post other than writing what I'm thinking at the moment... ;D I've been looking at the Benz and thinking maybe it's time to change her look. Or perhaps getting something different and keeping the Benz scruffy... dunno really!

Yep, I know what you mean Having been getting Janes Syncro ready, there is something nice about Fresh paint ;D (Cheers again Nightmares ) Fresh paint, Shiny (Black Powdercoat) rims and now Half leather means its quite a nice little alpine Blaster Its easier to keep like that as well, I always find that it gets harder and harder to maintain an older finish , but when you do it fresh then its a dodle and actually a pleasure to clean/wax it as its much easier than on older paint .... (always feels like a full on detail which is hard work ) Give it a go ..... you can always matt black it again if your not enjoying it

i know what you mean. my car is a state, dented, sooty, bad respray. never really cared much as the thing gets used like it should as a daily driver and on the track. but every now and then i want to make it look mint. thats why when i build my bluebird I'm gonna do it right. everything is going to be clean and shiney...

Thing is, it just looks so cool as it is! most awesome when i saw it pulling onto our motorway on route to RR07! However, howabout getting trick? repairing any gremlins, matt blacking with plenty of texture then multi coats of gloss laquer? and doing chrome bits copper or summat? though i think the cream wheels look so good cos of the chrome. hmm tricky isnt it I always yearned for a shiney car, but if owt happend to it after all that work i'd cry. i'd wanna be out there. having said that if i learn to paint its only the cost of paint and my time for touch ups. so one day i'll shine a few up.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Feeling your pain. But I crossed the bridge to 'not having a shiny car land' a long time ago...
I've resprayed two cars in my life, the first I didn't even bother cleaning, selling it over a year later. The second I sold pretty pronto before damaging it.
I don't have enough respect or time to care for good paint.

I don't have enough respect or time to care for good paint. I know what you mean. Although I am starting to think that "maintaining" rust is just as much work as maintaining good paint. I like the Benz the way it is, don't get me wrong, but I there are mods I'd like to make to a car (not specifically to the Merc) that wouldn't look right on a rough car ;D I guess what I'm really after is another car! I've had just one for too long now ;D

I don't have enough respect or time to care for good paint. Me neither but I quite like paint that is vaguely shiny and looks presentable with a quick wash. My feeling about "rat" stuff is that it should always be a stage towards a good looking car.

Meh, have had too many 'you little bastid!' moments with something as mundane and everyday as a newish focus. Never having anything as a daily with shiny paint, or something expensive enough that i'm worried about the exterior look of it. Every time the focus gets a tiny scratch for me to deal with it becomes an ass-ache and i get all freaked about it - if someone scratched the capri or the saab or one of my daily beaters - i couldn't really care less.
So meh.

That is why I have three 9working) cars!! My daily Merc has shiny paint, whereas the old Rover has satin. Both IMHO are just as hard to maintain! (The Merc got a dent in the boot whilst recovering 'Beatrice' this weekend.....Grrrrrr! So spent three hours straightening that out)
If you still want the Satin look, then get the Merc sprayed in 2K with Matting agent. That paint is so durable!
Perhaps go for a Satin Army green or something? Bit like that Lexus that was shown on here a while back.
Odd isn't it, since my car has been imortalised in print, I too have started to change it's appearance?!?!? Now have Lime green wheels and whitewalls! Am also thinking of repainting the grill a different colour too.

i've gone for the shiney paint & chrome and thats my daily driver. i've used a light cellulose colour which i learnt to spray myself so repairs would be easy, but i'm not worried about usinig it as when it gets a bit rough i'll be ready for a change to a ratty look!

Thanks for the input guys, it's nice to see I'm not alone!
I'm not going to rush into anything, cos I have a bit of a weld-a-thon on the underside to complete before I start thinking about looks. Not looking forward to that.
I've been getting the urge for something 1990's Japanese as a daily. Funds and space don't permit but when the time comes it may be the ideal opportunity to get the turtle wax out and do something different with it.
