Impressed with the "M" who knew a turbo V8 was the answer to reliability.
Whilst your living the dream, the only bit I can relate to is "squeezing out the lumpy liquid , like a space station wannabee". Sadly on more then one occasion.
Thanks for posting your escapades, and glad everything's coming together.

Am in the process of buying an old house currently and not really knowing how to deal with them joined a facebook group. There is some good information on there, mainly around not using modern waterproof paints, mortars, or plaster. Water only ever goes down.
Seems a bit culty as well oddly enough.

Old houses are a tricky one, some will tell you to use only breathable materials and plenty of ventilation just like they were when they were built but then you end up with a cold damp house which costs a fortune to heat just like they were 100 years ago!
Old walls and timber structures certainly need to breathe but they also need to be kept dry the best approach if you want modern levels of comfort is to insulate (remembering between floor joists etc) and add DPM to the inside with controlled ventilation (ideally via a heat exchanger) then allow the the outside to breathe if the house is clad that is easy with modern membranes, if not it's really about keeping as much water as possible off of it and air flowing around it so cutting back trees, keeping soil levels below DPM, fixing gutters, pointing brickwork, maintaining flashings etc.

well , apart from 2 more trips to oxon , and bringing the tvr bck , and a lot of bonfire action not much happening i did have a fit of clearing today . the old oil tank is on a series of 3 block pillars, and then a layer of 2 x 8 planks , whih are all rotten , so i cleared out this.. those pics are actually after i cleared one side ,,a bit ... ended up with a v sweaty robert and this .. so now i can get at it . in other news the lister water pump saga raised its ugly head again .. i had a day of working on the pump, getting soaked , tramping up the 20 m climb in ABOUT 500 METRES , 6 TIMES, TO SEE IF THE RESERVOIR WAS FILLING , ooops caps , then taking out one pump ,and putting in another , that was quieter but even less effective , at least i got a small dribble out of the first one ,...... hauling said 50 lb pump 3 acres uphill to house and other pump all the way back again , and now a 3 day hs with no water . it really reminds you of how lucky we are in the modern age to have water on tap .may just throw out the old fashioned lister and chuck a modern pump that will live in the well . and that's exactly what i did ,my good buddy bernard sent me a link to this .. www.vevor.co.uk/deep-well-pump-c_11104/750w-borehole-deep-well-submersible-water-pump-borehole-1-hp-house-garden-p_010291626589and after a bit of research i thought.. hey its cheap . so it may burst into flames or it may work ,and stuff me it arrived v quickly .. was nicely made on the outside and v heavy ,so i tied a rope around my belt and roped it down the well , and suspended it with 4 ropes , oh yes , and i did use 3 jubilee clips connecting it to the black water pipe . connected the old pump sides together with a stop cock tap .. stood back and switched it on , it worked ! , slight vibration and humming , but i treked once again up the hill and we had good gushage happening , phew , first bath in 7 days . so far so good . i took the lister pumps apart and i could see why not much pumping happening , one had a worn bore and neoprene piston washers which are a no no , and the other had dried out leather piston washers . i now have the correct jet for the rayburn burner , so that may be tomorrows fun . regards robert oh ps , more weird stuff found in that foliage , no idea what the big cast thing is .. those weights are from the sash windows , and that sheet is solid lead .

Quite a decent head on those pumps and not particularly expensive.
Are you controling it with level switches ? At 750w it might be a bit expensive to run 24/7 Forget that, just spotted the level switch in the reservoir on page 1

had a fun time today trying to replace the wooden beams under the tank , luckily it only had 4" of oil in it , still was a struggle. need more planks really , although those are 6 x 2.5" oak . You can see the rotten wood underneath the tank . i really want the tank to be behind the house , and out of sight , and the place i want to put it ... is just the right size , however i don't know if i have the energy to make a base , so in the spirit of investigation i had a little scratch around and , look what i found ... (oh yes i also installed the gas bottle there a month or two ago ) that looks like a pretty solid bit of plinth tasticness , and i reckon with some slab laying mix , and some 6 or 8 concrete slabs, i could make a base for it ., this run a 10mm pipe into the hs and to the boiler . would make the hs look much better .. Even from this angle its a goppin eyesore . regards robert

Bit safer from fuel thieves as well. How about filling it though - can the tanker reach it in the new place?

Is it an internally bunded tank ? Moving a good option if it is, easy enough to use a 1000l ibc tank to transfer. Ibc Frame then good for firewood storage. If not bunded then save up for one that is for the new location as a nightmare of historic proportions if they leak. Neighbour has a £30k fight with insurance cover over a leaking tank… Progress ! Be careful moving the tank as there may be restrictions on where it can be positioned, in particular in relation to proximity to doors and windows where a potential fire could spread into the house.
Looking at its current position it does look like someone put it there to keep a separation distance.
While it might not be something that concerns you there might be issues when it comes to filling it with the supplier who might refuse.

yup good points , i have been reading up on siting tanks , re leakage , i have had tanks and moved them about since 94 , and never had a leaker , looking at them i don't really see, if its carefully moved ,and on a flat base ,how they get to leak ?
biggest problem on getting a bunded one is transport , i think a 1000 non bunded would go on the astra , but the bunded ones are bulky .

Hi Robert, forgot you are used to the tanks so at least you know the main pitfalls. Our new one can still give a little eau d’kerosene in hot weather so I’m glad we put it a little away from the house. However I wouldn’t put it past you to like the smell! Progress! Why did your neighbors tank leak James ? Older tank that wasn’t inspected, thinking some more it might even have been a metal tank, it was the middle of lockdown so couldn’t get too involved / see it being removed. The sheen on the river gave it away… Disposal of contaminated soil cost the money apparently. Lots of S/H tanks on market as people with money get new greener options at least ! Sure one would strap to the roof of the Astra. Our new one is a bit undersized for the house (1400L replaced 2200L) if always want to order 1000L + but buying groups etc have lost the differential on 500L vs 1000L or more orders, just have to watch the gauge. I would really consider an other option as with politics getting crazy about nox and co2 every investment in oil burning could be a waste in a very short time. Thom
