Long ago. I thought that it was about time that I did a thread about my Standard Ten Companion so here goes. Back in 1995 I was at a local steam rally with my Austin Somerset when I first saw the Standard, I had always liked the Standard Eight & Ten range but it was not until then that I realised that they made an estate version known as the Companion. Looking at the car I saw that it had a For Sale sign in the window, the wife liked it & the government at that time had just introduced tax exemption for pre 1960 vehicles so this was the perfect excuse to have another old car that could earn it’s keep on my daily commute so for £500 it was mine....three days later I was made redundant. I used the car for a year but when I started working further from home I needed something more modern so the Standard was parked up for a few weeks until I could work on it, weeks turned to years & that did not do it any good at all. I built a timber frame that attached to the bumper bars & fixed roofing underlay to that so that it could still be moved when I needed to cut the hedge, it became a sort of mobile shed. At the start of 2021 having taken early retirement I decided that it was time to do something with it before it was too late.

Now that is lovely. I thought a '59 would have the Pennant style front wings. I much prefer the look of the original rounded wings, so much so that I've got some in stock in case I ever get offered a Companion with the Pennant ones. Nicer to have the one piece rear door as well.
What's the plan for it?

I think these are officially rarer than a rare thing. Nice. These kind of little estate cars are super cool and also kinda useful.

Nicer to have the one piece rear door as well. What's the plan for it? It should have had the Pennant front end, mine had the wings changed before I got it, I too prefer the earlier look & the one piece rear door, the car is a bit too narrow for the double doors that early cars had. The plan is a straight forwards restoration, it is quite rough though.

I've always considered the saloon to be a pretty rare thing, the estates must be as rare as it gets. Nice choice.

The Eights & Tens were quite common in the late 1960s when I was a kid, they were usually driven by elderly gent's in trilby hats & trench coats who did not enjoy driving, many surviving cars are very low mileage.

Feb 2021 Assessment A car in pieces takes up far more space than an assembled one so in preparation I made space in my single garage where my Austin lives & added some shelving in our summer house (posh shed) much to the wife’s delight. The Standard will be an out door restoration. The car had had a sort of restoration some time in the 1980’s which consisted of plating over the rot, tack welding the bolt on panels where the flanges had disappeared then blowing over the green paint, rust & dirt with a fresh coat of rattle can blue. In all honesty it was a bit too far gone but Companions are few & far between & besides this was to be a learning project for me. The interior was in quite good condition, there was a small cigarette burn on one door card, the vinyl head lining was split above the rear door & the driver’s seat was sagging but not much else. Mechanically the car was complete, the engine turned on the handle but had lost compression over the years of non use so this will require a rebuild. By the end of February I had removed the temporary cover structure & used the timber to construct a store for the body panels & begun stripping the car.

With regard to the "originality" aspect of your rebuild / restoration, I am in total agreement with you, it's your car and you build it to your own personal preference, Any "discrepancies" will certainly not detract from my personal enjoyment of the ongoing thread, Looking forward to seeing future updates on this, Nigel

Love it. A real survivor, and perfect that you rebuild it how it came to you / how you like it. Doubly liked just for the years it spent as a mobile shed - wonderful!

The car is basically going to be like an earlier version of the Companion, I also have the earlier type instrument binnacle & steering wheel to put on, if the 948cc engine can be overhauled it will go back in as it is perfectly adequate otherwise I will fit a later Herald engine.

Back in the day some police forces ordered both Austin Hampshires & Ford Pilots fitted with floor change gearboxes from preceding models.

I never thought that the two styles sat well together. You and me both! American influences at their worst, I always liken it to taking a lovely English Rose (add Keira Knightley, Rachel Riley to taste) and sticking on Julia Roberts big gob and that Kardashian bint's 'arris And that's why I've got some round front wings ready if I ever get a Pennant bewinged Companion. Or pickup or van for that matter.
