So I’m re plumbing all the brake lines on my Mk1 fiesta, and while 99% of them are DIN flares, I’ve got one I’m stuck on, as the original pipe work and hose is long gone… It’s the connection between the hard line and the front flexi, the end of the flexi is a concave male, (based on pics I’ve found below) so do I need to use an OP1 / SAE convex / SAE bubble? Pic of brake hose: I mentioned flares to automec when enquiring about some 3/16 kunifer and a bunch of fittings, and they said that I should ignore what I’m replacing, and ignore what I’m fitting to, and just use an SAE double flare / OP2 on everything regardless of wether it’s a concave or convex seat etc… (apparently kunifer seals any which way) Now they obviously know what they’re doing, and have been selling pre made brake lines for years. But that just doesn’t sit right to me, so I’ll be replacing everything like for like and using DIN flares and DIN male fittings on the new stuff like master cylinders, prop valve etc… What do y’all think???

I felt at the beginning when I first started reading this that the advice you'd been given was correct / good! Do you even know the odd union is original to the design of the car? Could have been bodged by someone else many years ago?

SAE single was consigned to the bin of history years ago. OP2 will be fine and seal perfectly.

Could have been bodged by someone else many years ago? It could well be, I’ve no reason to doubt what automec advised, other than a lack of experience with brake lines, which leads me to think I should be replacing it all like for like (Din flares and fittings all round, which I’ll stick with for the pedal box masters, tee pieces, and prop valve which all have the same concave flare seats as the rest of the car) Automec said that the original steel lines needed din flares to seal correctly, but as kunifer is more deformable, I can just use SAE double flares for everything along with SAE tapered male fittings, which I guess extends to my original posted question… Everything is original, and the brake hose I’ll be attaching to will be from goodridge / similar which is just the same as standard equipment.

I thought as much… ignoring automec’s advice I just figured it would match the tapered seat in the female fitting and the concave seat of the brake hose best out of the available flares… What do you think about using op2 for everything instead of DIN?? I’ll obviously use SAE male fittings too if going that way.

if you have the dies to make the appropriate flare I would definitely do that rather than relying on squashing something to fit and t5he guesswork involved in is it tight enough or will i curse word fluid out or did I just crush it to hell and strip the threads...
15 Nm is a torque figure I found recently for 10x1.0 fittings by the way.

this is how the flare looks for the front brake pipe on a fiesta it's easy to make with a hand held flaring tool

Glad I’m not the only who isn’t on board with automec’s advice. I’ll go with my gut and do what’s right. I don’t have a torque spanner, but I’ll take it easy. The car will be subject to plenty of testing before it hits the streets.

I assume the original pipe you replaced had a double flare too?? I spoke to goodridge who said they refer to the concave male fitting as a dual seat. Which I guess means will take a concave / convex flare… That’s great news. I can order all the bits now and get bending! Cheers.

yes that's how the original pipe looked Super star! It does now mean I need to get the gear to do both DIN and Sae double flares, but at least it’ll be right! Thank you!
