Hi all, Hoping for a bit of advice on recovering vehicles. I need to collect my VW T25 back from the paintshop next month and I'm hoping to use one of the self-drive beavertail recovery trucks. It comes with a winch, straps and all safety gear etc. Worked really well for my Golf, but obviously, the van is larger. Am I right in saying 3.5T is the standard car license limit, which leaves about 1.5T payload spare for the van itself. The van is a bare rolling shell, no engine, box or interior and doesn't have a hightop or anything so should be under? Is this ok to do or am I doing something I shouldn't Thanks!

You should be OK for the weight, and it ought to fit on the bed. The winches on these things tend to be electric, and are seriously underpowered. How far are you moving the VW, as it might not be much more expensive to have it moved by someone who does this everyday. I drove a recovery truck for 15 years, and I probably wouldn't bother renting a small truck for this sort of job.

you need to look at the front wheel drive chassis cabs to ensure the biggest payload, all the rear drive ones are a few hundred kilos more, depends massively on the weight of the bed too, most of these things are running around seriously overweight.
luckily it does seem a T25 is pretty light, easily under 1400 if there's no engine.

The problem with older rwd recovery trucks is usually that you go over on rear axle weight before you hit max gross weight.
More modern recovery trucks have lighter alloy bodies and alot are fwd and lighter overall now too.
I don't think you will have any problem carrying a rolling shell on either tho.

Thanks all, can always rely on the wisdom of RR. Appreciate the help! I may well look into someone to move it for me but as it's all fresh paint and the collection timeline keeps moving I'm kind of keen to have as much control for flexibility myself. It's only got to go about 20 miles or so. The truck is a modern FWD Peugeot Boxer with an alloy body and does specifically state a payload of 1.5T. It does have an electric winch. I can't comment on power but dragged my Mk2 no worries so hopefully, an empty van shouldn't be an issue? My van doesn't have any bumpers on it either so is a little shorter and should fit on the bed ok by my calculations. It's basically this again:

My 7 seater T3 caravelle weighed 1450kg with me onboard last time it was on the weighbridge at the tip, so a tintop without the engine, box and interior i'd say you'd be looking at around the 1100kg mark. About the same weight as a mk2 golf.
