Unlucky The same happened to me earlier this year. My E21 with all mods and standard 1.8 carb engine was £500 with flux, to put a 318is engine in it was going to be £550. I had to go back to uni at the end of september and the car wasn't finished so I bought myself a bog standard e30 325i touring. I thought insurance shouldn't be that much of a problem since its standard and it isn't that much quicker than an IS... £1000!! Safe to say, I'm not driving a bog standard 325i right now. I'm 22 but I think thats taking the pee. You can't go wrong with a E30, I've got 3. What E30 was it?

318iS. I can get insured through other companies but the company I'm with (Sky insurance) Are underwritten by ensign. Apparently Esign aren't Bimmer friendly especially when your a 20yo lad.
Insurance companies and the whole insurance system is a pish take! If that stupid clio driver hadn't driven off I'd be clear and dry! But "if, if's and buts were monkey nuts...."

To be honest, when you're young it's not taking the curse word, the genuinely don't want your business so put in loopy quotes to put you off. The reason they don't want your business is because of all those curse word with the kitted Saxos and Corsas doing handbrake turns on ASDA's car park. Occasionally they spin off and kill someone and it costs the insurance company a packet.
If you've already had a claim it's a million times worse. My second car was stolen and never recovered when I was 18 and it took probably 5 years for my insurance premiums to recover.
All you can do about it is keep your nose clean and wait.

I'm one of those curse word in a saxo haha. The irritating thing is I can get reasonable insurance with other companies, its just my insurance company that won't give me insurance and I'm tied to them for another 4 months

I feel your pain RE BM's as I'm of a similar age - I tried to buy a really nice black 325 last year - but AF quoted me 1172. They still quoted similar this year - parts & the badge hike the insurance up really. A 325 is TWICE what I pay on the Corvette for insurance.......Er, right - think I know which one I'd stick with

I like this pic But only cause i can see it hitting the floor, spinning off and ridding the world of another one of these shocking vehicles! Seems to me, your insurance company is doing you a favour, now go and buy and early sharknose or a 2002...

"stunning" it is! I've already got rims for my stunner and they don't have that much dish! I did listent to the anoracs thogh who said straying off the the offset would kill magic handling character. As for insurance, don't worry, this will annoy you for a short while and before you know it you'll be old! ;D

Qwerty - don't wish your youth away because of insurance! Having fast cars is nice... but it's not as nice as being young! I turned 30 the other week and found I was able to insure my E30 325i Sport (pic below) for under £300/year... would still prefer to be 10 years younger though... It'll be worth the wait - try all the usual people for a classic quote on an E30 come renewal time, sure someone will do it for a reasonable price. I think my brother was with Footman James on his Beetle on a classic policy at about your age so maybe try them?

Weirdos.

I found that lots of insurance companies simply don't insure BM's particularly not "highly modified" ones according to Vicky at HIC

I'm picking up a 318 with iS running gear and engine tomorrow and I'm 19. Alright, so its going to be stored till I'm 20 in jan and have 1 years no claims, but I get quotes now (without shopping around, just adrian flux) with these mods: lowered, alloys, exhaust, stripped interior, welded diff etc, of about £1100. And that'll drop once I'm 20 which is when I'll be insuring it.
Which is slightly cheaper than a nissan 200sx S13 would cost me, slightly more than a similarly modded sierra, but cheaper than a e21 320 (even though its faster) with even more mods on it!
Swings and roundabouts. You can either store it, or cancel insurance and go for it. Or not...

I can't cancel insurance because it'll cost me the remaining amount left on the policy which will prolly end up at near £400 one the admin costs etc have been added on.

I agree with stu about age vs cool cars and also think the toaster has a point. might be worth changing (or waiting) what about getting one insured limited miles as a second car, no commuting or owt? though i guess you wanna finance it with the saxo yeah?

Yeah it was going to be financed with Saxo.
Anyway I've come to the point of thinking that march is only 4 months! I'll be 21 then as well so Classic insurance may be possible! Also I'll be able to do LOADS more research and maybe even start collecting some bits and bobs ready for the purchase. Don't mind the Suxo TBH its just i have really got my heart set on an E30.
