Spent a little time templating the original plastics over the Perspex sheet I’d bought to replace the original inserts. I decided that if clears were going to look proper the new plastic had to have the bumps facing outward and the squares were straight up and down like on the original. Also got my key barrel back for the drivers side and both keys work perfect in it so just gotta fit it to the drivers side and have one key for the car which I’m well chuffed about! Probably get the lights sorted at the weekend and see how the end results look. Cheers!

Spent a bit of time doing a bit more on these rear lights. Still waiting for the spare drivers in the post so just working on one for the time being. Just need to see now if I can remover the little red fog light buster and bond some of the polycarbonate in to make full clear lenses Just waiting for some more butyl to come in the post make sure they’re not a little dry with the old stuff and seal nicely. Then I can just heat them up and sandwich them back together Cheers

The lights are looking great already. If you can’t get the fog out of the lens, can you recreate the lens itself with some clear? Bonding it to the light body should help it keep its shape, and you could probably recreate the black areas with paint on the inside of the lens too?
Either way, nice work. Clear rears are a vibe

Clear rears are a vibe Maybe mate but they’ve got a black plastic lip that’s part of the lense too. It’s clips in with some small clips and butyl sealant so I’d be a bit dubious about cutting the lense off and making my own. Only because I’ve never done it before but I’m up for a challenge anyway, I’ll see how they’re looking when I get the sense out again.

Finally got some extra butyl tape through the post and decided to stick the lights back together. Not sure if the butyl I got did more harm that good or what as they were super tight to go back in. Not sure now about you being able to see the bits of black butyl that hold the “lenses” in too. There are a few marks at the bottom of the light that seem to come with splitting them open as well. Overall I’ll give this one an 8.5/10 to say it was a DIY at home. Just the other side to do now then the task of fitting them both too 🙄 Cheers!

Tail light chronicles entry 127 Dear diary… all jokes aside I spend some MORE time on the one tail light before I take the other side off and apart. Got the sandpaper out and wet sanded the lenses now they’re stuck back together. Sanded the major marks out with 1200, then 2000 to restore the clarity and a polish after with a medium pad on the DA. Ended with ceramic coating them with how easy it is to small bits when they’re off the car. They weren’t too bad before Sanded All finished up Cheers!

Finally got to being productive on the car with a job I’ve been putting off for ages. Got a new key barrel re pinned to match my key that works every other lock bar the drivers side. There’s a little bit more slop in the barrel than before, I’m not sure if this is due to having to use a second hand barrel or what but both the keys work and the old key doesn’t 🤷🏻♂️ Whipped the door card off and got to work Although the old plastic door clip was in good Nick I reckoned the home made metal one that came on the old handle was a safer bet as the plastic one would probably fall apart one day. As rudimentary as it was whoever made it did a good job! Got round the handle cleaned up and the handle fandangled back into place New key I had cut now works in all the doors/ignition/glove box which I’m buzzing about. Like I said the only thing a bit curse word is the return spring on the barrel doesn’t seem as snappy as the old lock you have to be a bit gentle to not feel like you’ll “spin” the key too far. I'm not taking it apart again either way so fixed is fixed. Spurred on by the success I whipped the boot carpet up and all the black plastics off the back of the car ready to heat some butyl up tomorrow and take the rear lights out Cheers!

Still waiting for rims and lows for the Yaris...
Nice work on the lock, for a bodge the metal repair that's been done looks pretty good. Gives me flash back to my 6n2's and trying to fix the stupid lock mechanism that broke on both of them 🤣

I’d imagine it’s the reason someone made this one in the first place is that they were fed up of it breaking all the time. Cause I’ll be honest like anythi door related on this thing it’s not something I wanna have apart anytime soon 😖

Another day and other little bit of productivity. Decided to get the rear light in the car for good with the Centre panel and loosely fit my spare (poorer condition rear light) into the right had side to plug the gap. Which just leaves me with one nice drivers side light to take apart and clear out. Luckily the body shop used curse word butyl tape when they put the lights back in 🤦🏻♂️ even though the stock stuff softened up nicely with 10 mins of carful heat gun action. Peeled all the curse word stuff off and used some new stuff attached to the lights. Took a few attempts of heating and smushing to get it as flush as I could and the left is on 🙏🏻 Back in with the Centre garnish too after it got ceramic coated Behind the lights is looking decent too thankfully. One less place to worry about as water probably has a habit of collecting here. I’ll take the other light apart tonight and get some clear bits templated later in the week to complete the job. Cheers!

Finally got around to splitting the other side light and getting it all sealed up again ready to go on the car tomorrow morning. Not much to report just much of the same stuff. Also ordered some of the right coloured bulbs to make sure the lights are still the right color and we’re good to go. Cheers!

All done and on the car. Before After Think it’s definitely more in keeping with the rest of the clear lamps and little red repeaters on the back bumper. Ordered some red stop and tails and some chrome indicators for the front and rear to keep it legal. New coilovers next. Cheers

Got the bulbs through the post to get the rear lamps all legal and got them fitted and all the boot trims back in place. Also stuck some new bulbs in the fronts while I was at it and discovered a bulb that I feel like had never worked since I had the car. Started down the rabbit hole of finding out that they’re actually cornering lights, they only come on when the headlights are on and the indicators are on on that side. That stay lit while the indicator flashes and then cancel when the indicators turned off. Got to testing the wiring at the switch, then bench testing the relay, then testing the wires post relay that lead me to a corroded connector on both sides that actually took some aggro to clean up but two new bulbs later and they’re working! Another little box ticked and something working again. Next up is the coilovers then a full detail/polish/ceramic coat to try and preserve as much of the paint on there as possible. Cheers!

Another quick one. Spent some time sorting a few more bits and curse word. Got some Centre cap stickers made up in clear gel for the wheels. I had to have a good friend completely re draw the logo from once picture that I could find and online. Seems the deal when you’re tryna recreate bits for rare wheels. Then I send the drawing off to have them base in gel. They’re slightly undersized to make them easier for me to just stick on, don’t think you’d ever notice anyway them being clear. Also got the battery tie down fitted because the car never came with one, ready to take the car to the first meet of the year. Actually really enjoyed discovering that the random plastic clip was a holder for the rear post. Took the plastic out and checked the actual metal tray, cleaned both up and stuck it all back together. Took the car to the meet and only took one pic! It was decent but there’s still loads of salt and curse word on the road which really irked me. Had to leave the car parked in a different spot over night as the old lady’s house I park infront of needed to get into her garage this morning. I thought no harm but sod’s law that as I came out to it this afternoon to wash all the salt off from yesterday, there was a scuff up the bumper where the other side neighbors house I parked outside has revered his Honda HRV thing up it, buggered off inside and not told me! To say I was fuming was an understatement but without proof I can’t just go knocking his door in accusing him of it 🤷🏻♂️ (the in-laws saw him move his car and then walk round it and put it back on his drive and nothing else was parked infront of my car while it was there). Enough rambling I thought I’d best try and sort it and grabbed my tools from the unit after work. Luckily I managed to get 99.9% out bar a could bits I decided to touch up that you can still just see. alls well that ends well and that but the audacity of some people when he knows it my pride and joy is a joke. What an inconsiderate knobhead. Thanks for listening to the waffle and ranting. Cheers!

So seen as the yaris has got some stinky holes in it I decided to give up on it 😂 and bought it’s replacement today, 1.4 1987 volvo 340 with a 4 speed manual. Once the difffs seen a welder and the rear tyres have seen 60psi it should be golden 😉 same lady has owned it for the last 17 years, it’s a bit rough round the edges but it’s got ticket till Jan and was cheap 🙏🏻 the interior is virtually mint and bone stock too even got the other half behind the wheel cause she approves! thanks!

Louis, Ref. the remedial work on the bumper, did you just use compound / polish or did you wet sand first ?? (Whichever, it came out lovely, pity your neighbour hasn't got the gonads / manners to admit what he'd done and apologise !!)
