May I suggest a small improvement to the forum layout? Some threads consist for a large part of full quotes, often quoting earlier full quotes. These posts often quote the post right above, and, as far as applicable, usually include the full set of photos again as well. This is completely unnecessary and makes for very annoying reading, especially in pic heavy threads. It also takes up a lot a server space I suppose, and leads to some threads becoming hundreds of pages long (although it seems some OPs see that as an "achievement"...). Many forums explicitly ban unnecessary quoting, and although I dislike heavy handed moderation, I think in this case rightly so.
However, I believe on RR this quoting behaviour may be (partially) the result of a design issue, as there is a very prominent "quote" button, but not a "respond" one. Perhaps some people are not aware of the fact that they can also respond by using the quick reply text box/ full reply link (or that quotes can be trimmed down/ edited), so perhaps it's a good idea to introduce a "respond" button next to the "quote" one, clicking of which will then lead to the full reply text screen.

Thanks HoTWire, if it has the desired effect it'll make the forum an even nicer place!

Maybe another entry in the Modus Operandi as well for explanation? Regarding ignorance (of netiquette)? In that matter, thanks to Rich (and possibly other mods, too) for removing those full quotes in the past.

It’s also a peeve here too and if the quotes images don’t bear any importance on the reply I’m happy to prune but sadly I/we can’t be everywhere 😄

May I suggest a small improvement to the forum layout? You may and I've done it. Need a new icon from Littlepixel though

Good idea!
The most annoying thing for me is finding a favourite thread has had 2 pages added, putting the kettle on, expecting some good viewing, and then realising that 75% of the "new" content is, in fact, "old".

Adding 'Respond' and making it the most prominent is a good call, but it's a bit more nuanced than it seems, as we now have both 'reply' and 'respond' doing (I think) the same thing—so I think we should keep to one name to avoid confusion. (I prefer 'reply', but either is fine). 'Quote' is really useful and powerful but definitely shouldn't be used for most replying - it's useful to cite a specific micro-thing said previously (or further back to revive a lost thought in the thread, or to speak about a specific image — but annoying when used as a blanket 'reply' method When I use 'quote' I'm always careful to remove nested other quotes, non-salient images/text so as to keep things on-point, but I'm a veteran of the web and am confident doing the little edits to the markup code needed to make this happen (and I never use a mobile for this sort of thing). Obviously itt's too much to expect this from all forum users - this is car forum not a geeky computer forum! Could there be a way of auto-showing/hiding the quoted content, so that even if someone does unknowingly quote a massive post, it's mostly hidden bar a small precis and thus not impacting the page length - i.e. Show / Hide the fullness of the quote with a small minimise/maximise arrow ( 🔼 / 🔽 ) HoTWire - can do a button - but shall it be 'Respond' or 'Reply'?

.... Or.... we need 'Respond with quote' and 'Respond to author of this post' (with snappier titles obvs.)

(I prefer 'reply', but either is fine). Yeah I'm going to remove the top Reply button, so we can make it Reply if that is better. 'Quote' is really useful and powerful but definitely shouldn't be used for most replying - it's useful to cite a specific micro-thing said previously (or further back to revive a lost thought in the thread, or to speak about a specific image — but annoying when used as a blanket 'reply' method Maybe we need some secondary buttons, or make the Reply/Response button the more orange call to action? Could there be a way of auto-showing/hiding the quoted content, so that even if someone does unknowingly quote a massive post, it's mostly hidden bar a small precis and thus not impacting the page length - i.e. Show / Hide the fullness of the quote with a small minimise/maximise arrow ( 🔼 / 🔽 ) That may be possible, the new version of Proboards is arriving at the end of June apparently, at least in beta, so we'll have a job of work re-doing the layout on that, I'll see if I can do something clever with embded quoted stuff. HoTWire - can do a button - but shall it be 'Respond' or 'Reply'? Reply please

HoTWire I think the issue now is that having a 'Reply' button on a specific person's comment feels like you are going to reply directly to that post - like those forums with 'nested' commenting. But in fact you're just making a general reply at the bottom of the thread. So the expected behaviour now is a bit odd, because if I wanted to 'reply' to a specific point made by someone further up the page I just get zoomed to the bottom and am commenting without that context on the general thread, rather than what I thought I might be doing which was commenting on a person's specific comment. Could we do 'nested' commenting in ProBoards as that would make the most sense; 1) [ Reply to thread ] —makes new post at bottom of page 2) [ Quote this comment ] —quotes content of chosen comment and nests it under that comment 3) [ Respond ] —nests comment beneath chosen comment, but no quoting Tricky, and probably brings a host of new issues along with perceived improvements. example:

Littlepixel I'll have a think. Nested comments are a no, but will have a think.

Not sure why I suggested "respond" Littlepixel , of course "reply" makes much more sense. I think "reply to thread" and "quote this comment" (or "quote this post"), although perhaps a bit wordy, should work. I agree with HoTWire regarding nested replies, I think it would make threads really difficult to follow.

One more thing if I may, HoTWire . The new button links to the quick reply box; I think its use may be incentivised by linking to the full editor, because that's the interface people who routinely use the "quote" button are familiar with.

When I hover over the "reply" and "quote" buttons, is it correct that they go completely yellow instead of an inverted version of the button? The "like" and "gear" buttons don't work that way. Maybe when hovering you could show an alt text that describes the button functionality.
