So I bought another old car.. but I have been searching for years for one like this. I've been bidding on Beetles in terrible shape from all over the country for years, never gotten as far as being allowed to see the car before the bidding reached a far to high price for me. For some reason Norwegians are willing to pay 10 000 pounds for a rusted beetle in terrible shape. Me on the other hand, want a rough one for cheap because I want an easy build to put my great grandfathers beetle steering wheel into. Enter a Rusted 73' beetle with low mileage, electric windows, sunroof, barely a floor and no engine. The guy I bought it from had countless sweet rides and semed to know everything there is to know about old and new VAG products alike. Now getting parts for the car is stupid easy here compared to my 65' toyota, everyone and their mother has had one and for some reason have enough parts to build a new one in their basement. Even my family is guilty of that, my uncle has quite the parts collection in his barn for not having owned one for almost 30 years. I kind of hope he also has a new engine for me in there. But it's registered with unlimited HP as long as the engine is a 2.0L. Now, I hoped to put a Porche engine in a beetle one day, but now I'm starting to think that there are lots of nice 2.0L subaru boxers with turbos that are easy to mount, so a EJ22T is looking plausible. If you have any wishes for what I should do with the car then please shout out! All ideas are welcome.

This will be interesting to follow. I’d vote for discrete mods. A Subaru engine will be fine or an electric conversion.

So it turns out it wasnt registered to the guy I bought it from, but to a Polish bloke half the country away. So now the fun of trying to get him to write it over on me starts.

It has an older GT-steering wheel fitted at the moment, but i'm planning to put in the original from a 1963 bug that was my families first car when I get it road legal and registered. I can't reach the polish bloke on the phone, but I have his adress so I sent him a letter in the mail since the one I bought it from still had that. He just forgott to send in his part of the new registration when he bought it (He has a few dozen cars so i actualy believe him on that) and our state agency that deals with cars says it's been to long so the registered owner will have to send in his part as well.

Back in the early 80s as Cal Look was just starting to kick off in the UK, one of the guys that used to ‘run’ with us had an amazing black 1303.
The front was slightly lowered with stock sized center line silver wheels, the back had big arches on it and oversized centerline wheels, the windows were tinted (though not blacked out) and it had a whale tail like a Porsche on the back.
I of course followed the sheep and built maybe 5 or 6 Cal Look bugs, but that car always stuck in my mind as something really cool and different.
Another car I really liked, was nearly my first car. A red shortened Baja bug (shortened around the b panel to rear arch), with a light roof chop and LOWERED.
Fantastic and would have been so much better (in my dream world) than the plain Jane 71 1200 I eventually bought (where the seller really did see me coming).

Hope you can sort it. Is that the factory air con cooler in the front? No, that's what I thought it was as well. But turns out the car has been rebuilt for liquid cooling at one point so what you see is a small radiator. It will however be removed since it stops me from properly closing the trunk properly.

I most likely will lower it simply because I realy like lowered bugs (and they sell for a lott more), but I love the idea of a whale tail. In it's registry it's aproved with 285/40Z R 15 rear wheels and 205/50Z R 15 front wheels so I'm one of the few people in Norway to have the luxury of being able to fit oversized wheels, and I also love the idea of that. Sadly most tint is illegal here and I'm not one to tempt fate for such a small detail otherwise I would. I've seen extremely few Cal look bugs here, and I think it's a shame it didnt catch on the same way it did in most of the world so I might give it a shot. Honestly my bigest challenge is finding an original 1.6 motor for it, since we're a very frugal people and few took the option of larger engine sizes than the 1200 and 1300 came with. I have the luxury of having worked as a Fibre glass worker for a while, so I have the skills needed to make a lott of chasy parts myself and I figure that will help a lot since I'm not particulary good at metal fabrication or welding.

The 1300 motor is easy to change over to 1600/1641cc. The crank is the same, so it's only necessary to swap the barrels/pistons and heads for new parts, which is kind of a good idea anyway.

Thank you for the advice! I'm going to look into it if I cant find a 1600 motor soon. 1300's are plentyfull and cheap.

Something else i'm curious about, what name did the "superbeetle" as the americans call them or as we say the "BIG" go by in Britain? I've done some accounting and figured I can get the rust fixed, new floorboards and a cheaper 1600 engine for about a thousand pounds. Luckily I'm a self-employed carpenter so I have all the hours to work on it I want. I have a picture of it from the seller of it fully assembled before he took the engine out of it, it's last MOT ran out in 2013. and a picture of how it sits in the backyard waiting for my Toyota RT40 to be done so I can move it into the workshop.
