Well today I decided it was time to order oil & filters for the Chevy pickup so started the hunt for 10w30 which wasn't as easy as you would have thought. I did see 10w40 in abundance but I'm not jenned up enough to now whether that would have been ok. Anyhoo....... I have had the Volvo XC70 for about 6 months and after the service light popped up, I decided on getting the bits together to service that as well but then, whilst researching what I needed, I came across the required 0w30!!!! Where did this oil come from and more importantly where have I been hiding?  Surely I can't be the only one whose never heard of it! |

Pretty much every car on the road nowadays uses a super thin fully synthetic oil for economy and emissions. Nothing new there.

It’s basically got the viscosity of brake fluid, I struggle to see how it actually works, but clearly does. It’s witchcraft |

Might be why so many new vehicles use oil / need topping up between changes. That’s again down to how the engines are manufactured. They consequently wear faster due to how they are built in the first place to meet emissions targets. stealthstylz is your man for explaining the phenomenon. |

Our boring modern VW Golf uses 0w 20. Dribbles out like water.

10w30 is available from any half decent factors and isn't THAT expensive. A decent factors will be able to supply a semi synthetic OR fully sythetic choice. The 2000MY Omega engine in my 78 Dolomite Sprint runs on the stuff. I, like you, used to think a 10/30 was gnats pee, compared to some of the really modern stuff, it's treacle!
