I wasn't sure where to put this as its not a proper car its more like an RC/BMX/Bathtub. Its been in my family from new, my nan won it in a raffle in 1986. In 1987 i sat in it. Its never actually been used other than the day it arrived. Having said that its basically a barn find. I bought it home yesterday, i only went to my uncles to sort out his pc, then went to his garage barn, saw it, suggested it needed a clean and it was a snug fit, i didnt realise its 6ft long! it needs a good clean and service, inner tubes tyres are cracked and out of shape but might be ok, i'll probably find more when i take the body off I'm going to be very careful about how i clean it, i don't want it to look restored. its got all its original paperwork too and the sticker on the brakelight in the first pic is the factory QC sticker. couldnt not do it. just needs blue neons..

Love these and would really like one to tinker with but they're commanding strong prices now. A good friend of mine has one that he's going to restore. I did try talking him into doing it in the Team Lotus JPS colours like the one Senna was seen in, but he's not having any of it.

That's an early model with the grey boot! They clean up lovely with some jif and a sponge. Mine was filthy and cleaned up nice.

Handy bit of info there thanks, I didn't know about the grey boot being an early one, good to know. I was thinking of just using washing up liquid to start, but if jif is OK I'll give it a go.

Love these and would really like one to tinker with but they're commanding strong prices now. . Regardless of the fact that my nan won it, I'm the only one who's sat in it, and its been sitting there doing nothing for years, I'm really enjoying getting this up to spec.its like the 1930 meccano car I rebuilt for my boss. I'd never be able justify buying one but the opportunity to tinker with one for free is right up my street. Also if you look at the c5 in the way they were marketed, they're rubbish, but look at them for what they are and they're brilliant. Yesterday was spent cleaning it, wd40 where it needed it, regressed bearings. It's not mint but it's a good 9/10 so far. I've had it confirmed from my uncle that it's never been driven, not even on the day they got it. I'll post some pics later.

Id planned to take the body off to check the chassis out but seeing as its never been off i thought it best to leave it on and do what i can. i started by cleaning it, wiped all the dust and muck off with damp cloth and gave it a go with cif and a green pad. It came up really well, then i wiped it with some matt dashbord wipes. started with this. ended up with this the footwells were full of dust and stuff but no feet ever been in there, mine probably didnt reach. once id sorted the body out i went underneath. sprayed everything with wd40 as it was all pretty stiff. the chain has got a couple of seized links but its all good under there. hour after spraying everything freed off. had the bearings out and regreased, peddles really well now. ive now relised its one wheel drive, the other side freewheels and unexpectedly has the smallest set of brakeshoes i ever did see. i draw the line at calling them cute. Also tested the reflective bits. They work. its almost like its not 35 years old, its like having a big lump of future sitting on the living room table.

I wonder if anyone ever hooked up a ZX Spectrum and monitor to the 'dashboard' of one of these? That way, you could play things like Manic Miner as you cruise along...

Awesome. They were the future, I saw them in Comet when they were launched. Our local store set up a track around the shop so people could try them out - hilarious.
Could imagine one now with 2 hub motors and better batteries being quite effective.

Popped out yesterday to get innertubes and chain oil, went to local bike shop which has been there since 18-whatever-and-something, and was opened by a distant relative. I couldn't remember exactly how we were related so I said it was my nans uncle which is accurate enough, then told the story of the c5, and got a considerable discount which was nice. Its now all fitted up and waiting for air but my footpumps broke and I'm not switching the compressor on for kids bike tyres. Its at least nice to see it sitting with 3 decent looking tyres now. Cosmetically it's done and it can be peddled, next job is electrics but I'm not quite sure how I'm going to tackle that yet.

That looks superb. My brother has one sitting in his garage that he bought at a car boot sale when it was only a couple of years old

Yes that’s an early one, you can pretty much date it from the sticker on the console inside, mines still propped up against the garage wall awaiting attention after I fried the electrics

I got it outside to pump the tyres up, put the centre caps on which had never been fitted, and oil the chain. its really smooth and quiet and everything works as it should which is nothing like the day i got it when the tyres were hanging off and most things were stuck or stiff. the seized link in the chain has been sorted too. give it a slight shove and it rolls off. from this to this still needs electrics sorted, charger doesnt work and battery is probably dead, but it could be peddled which might be a job for niece and nephew soon.

Always had a thing for the c5 In the last 5 years they have quadrupled in price I bought a pile of parts two years ago as that was the only way I could afford one It's tatty so it will never be a mint one There's a couple of Facebook groups that I've found to be really helpful so definitely worth checking them out if you can

We rode bicycles in the queens jubilee parade as one of the displays. My brother rode a C5 which the electrics didn't work on. It was quite hard by all accounts. Ha

Any updates on this? Has it got a bike engine yet? No updates I'm afraid. It's currently hibernating and waiting for the electrics to be sorted. It needs a new battery and it got a fault somewhere from years ago which I can't do anything about until its got power. Uncle wants it to have an original battery, which I'm sure are unobtainable/useless compared to an upgrade, and I'm sure if it were sold it would be upgraded. I understand that originality is key but where the electrics are concerned it's a bit different. Also the market is a bit naff atm so we'll probably hang onto it abit longer and see what happens. All I know is uncle doesn't want it back.

After my last post about the c5 it ended up buried at the back of the spare room. Not intentional, but it just sort of got forgotten about. I figured I needed to finnish it off which meant sorting the electrics out since it was happily sitting on new innertubes and ready to be peddled. Now that I'm posting this I've realised that the last post about it was exactly a year ago tomorrow, so about time too it seems. First job was to sort out the pins on the back of the light console and plug it back in. The pins were all somehow bent so I carefully sorted them out without snapping any, put a bit of wd40 on the pug and eased it back on, which seemed to be a bit of a success. Then to get power it. The original battery is duff so I sought the plug on the battery cover and put two bolts through the cover where the battery terminals should be to clamp some jump leads to it and connected to another battery. We have life. This was a good start, so I tried to switch the lights on. Boom. So once I knew that much was working it was time for the big one. Will the wheels turn. No. The solonoid clicked but no action. The battery had come off a car sitting on the drive so I put it on charge for an hour and tried again. This time success! They spun but slowed down and when I tried again the solonoid clicked. It seems a car battery just hasn't got the oomph needed which leaves us with the option of get a proper battery for it which could be a waste of money because they all seem to get upgraded. It only going to get sold once its sorted and I can at least show it running. I'm just glad it all works now.😁

Sold it this morning to a private car museum, which is perfect given that its just going to sit in the corner on display and not get used. Je wasn't bothered that it didn't run properly, but it also respects my nans original intentions of it not being used. And my uncles happy with it too. All things considered it's a great outcome.
