EQUIPMENT
Colour coded bumpers with front and rear overriders, RS aerodynamic front and rear spoilers, front driving and fog lamps, laminated windscreen, RS1600i decals, remote control door mirrors, RS 4-spoke leather trimmed steering wheel, 2 speed plus intermittent wipers, tailgate wash wipe, head restraints, side window demisters, perforated headlining, coat hooks, vanity mirror on passenger sun visor, cigar lighter, rear ashtrays, 3-speed heater fan, coin box, trip recorder, tachometer, roof mounted digital clock. Factory Options; Black paint, tinted glass, tilt/sliding sunroof, central door and boot locking, electrically operated front windows, ESRT32P stereo cassette, electrically operated radio aerial, two rear seat belts. Dealer Accessories; Ford mud flaps, Extra Cover Plan (expired), Laserline alarm.
EXTERIOR
This RS1600i is finished in factory optional Black, (Code A 9), and boasts a deep uniform shine from its unrestored paint finish. The factory fitted and date stamped panels are pin straight and the underside has been detailed to a fantastic standard where visual appreciation of the perfect structural integrity is guaranteed. The distinctive decals are bright and the original rear spoiler is straight with no distortion issues and the front spoiler displays clearly the Motorsport logo and part number. There is a very faint scuff to the nearside door mirror edge. The correct stance is instantly recognisable as this example still sits on the special Koni shock absorbers only fitted to the RS1600i lowering the car by 23mm. The car remains exactly as it left the production line with every factory option ticked bar the opening rear quarter windows! The supplying Ford main dealer number plates and rear screen sticker as well as the ‘Made in West Germany’ windscreen sticker remain fitted. A very rare and desirable example of the first front wheel drive Ford ever to wear the RS badge!
INTERIOR
The interior of this RS1600i is truly special. Finished in Shark Grey Crushed Velour (Code TC), the formidable RS seats and deep side bolsters have retained perfect structural integrity and the matching door cards and perforated headlining are in pristine condition. The steering wheel is as new. The dashboard has no cracks and all interior equipment is functional including the fuel thrust cut-off warning lights. The factory optional ESRT32P stereo cassette and electrically operated radio aerial operate fully and were a combined factory option costing £342.28 in 1983! The boot area is spotlessly clean including the immaculate rear parcel shelf and the original hand scribe to the boot floor is still visible. This high specification Ford gives you more.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with Fords transverse mounted 1600 OHC Compound Value angle Hemispherical chamber (CVH) unit producing 115 BHP. Mated to the Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel Injection System incorporating deceleration fuel shut-off, special alloy cylinder head and camshaft the car has a top speed of 118mph and achieves 0-60 in 8.7 seconds. The engine bay is a exhibitionists dream, immaculate in presentation and correct in every way with Ford Motorcraft service items including fuel filter, oil filter and battery. The twin-coil set-up and finned cast alloy rocker cover are proudly on display, as are original inner wing stamps and factory VIN and body plates. The gear changes are light and a joy to use with the unique 0.83 fifth gear ratio fitted only to the RS1600i.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Correct cast alloy wheels with Ford Motorsport part number stampings to one spoke only are unmarked and are still shod with the manufacturer specification replacement Dunlop SP Sport Super D4 195/50 VR15 tyres. The matching spare has never been used. Diagonally split hydraulic circuits with tandem master cylinder, vacuum servo assistance and 9.4” ventilated discs up front bring the car to a halt but fall short in comparison to modern standards.
HISTORY FILE
Introduced in September 1981, this stunning RS1600i was built in June 1983 just before the final month of production in July 1983, one of 2,600 UK examples and one of 820 in factory optional Black. (Source: RS Owners Club). Registered new on the 1st August 1983 by Ford Main Dealer, Trimoco of Chelmsford, the car has covered a fully verified 53,423 miles from new with huge supporting history file. Formerly part of the famous Bonkers RS Ford collection, the car sat alongside an assortment of the most sought-after RS Fords amongst which is The Late Princess Diana’s Black Series 1 Escort RS Turbo. A full complement of handbooks including the stamped service book are contained within the blue Trimoco of Chelmsford A5 folder with even the business card from the New Car Sales Representative! The comprehensive history folder dates back to the first owners V5 registration document and all MOT’s certificates from the very first in 1986. A vast collection of service and maintenance invoices leave in no doubt this has been a cherished example and the superb performance of the car reflects this. Registered with the RS Owners Club and a proven show star amongst the marques elite, a standard RS1600i is very hard to beat and this outstanding example will not disappoint.
