Offered for sale is my 1973 Reliant Scimitar GTE
Price - £SOLD
3.0L V6 automatic
Tax and MoT exempt (though with current MoT to Dec)
On the button and in regular use
Maroon with tobacco interior
Full length Webasto sun roof
Ready to use and enjoy
Sold new in the summer of 1973, this Scimitar SE5a was finished in the superb combination of maroon coachwork, with tobacco interior and delivered with automatic transmission, electric windows and optional 8 track tape player. It was further upgraded from new with the fitting of a Tudor Webasto three-fold sliding vinyl sunroof, with the fabric colour-coded with the coachwork.
It's led a pretty cosseted life in the hands of a succession of Reliant Owners Club members and is a well above average example – there is none of the drooping doors, scabby interior and tired mechanicals that afflict most of the remaining Scimitars and recorded mileage is only 86,600 - believed to be correct. Being over 40 years old, it is tax and MoT exempt, (though it passed a voluntary MoT with ease in December, which remains valid until Dec 2022) and it is a really well sorted, nicely running example enjoying regular use.
A properly classic, fun, competent and surprisingly rapid machine that handles incredibly well for a car of such age. I have been entirely confident jumping into it and taking it on journeys of any length - happily using it for a daily 50 mile commute when desired. As an MoT and Road Tax exempt classic car it is eminently usable in modern traffic.
Condition description:-
Running gear:- In mechanically excellent condition having benefited from extensive work and improvements - no known issues. Brakes all having been rebuilt with new seals, braided stainless lines and components as necessary. Gearbox good, shifts cleanly, kicks down as expected, no clonks or rattles. Rear axle good. Engine shows excellent oil pressure, is lovely and quiet and provides stout performance with no nasty smoke, noises or rough running. Maintains steady temperature under all conditions. Benefits from upgraded stainless steel coolant pipes and full exhaust. Starts well hot or cold. Suspension tight and compliant with evidence of extensive refurbishment with new bushes, trunnions, shock absorbers etc etc - it drives really nicely and feels gratifyingly sporty and taught. Rolls on original steel wheels with original hubcaps, wearing a matched set of period correct Avon Turbosport tyres.
Electrics:- Original wiring loom in excellent condition, all electrical components, electric windows, lights, fans, gauges etc. working as intended, even the heated rear screen. Starts and charges as expected, original radiator fan working well. 8-track untested (don't have any tapes!) but powers on and radio makes noise, though doesn't want to tune.
Interior:- In largely original and amazingly good condition for the age. Original vinyl seats very good, showing only minor wear, headlining and sunroof excellent. Carpets, rear 1/4 trims, boot lining and rear seating also all in excellent condition. Dash good - some notable cracks / splits to instrument surround and elsewhere, but dash top is excellent. Even the door trims, notorious for water damage, are good. Aftermarket Mountney steering wheel fitted. Heater, fans, ram air and controls all working. Instrumentation very good. Original 8 track radio present.
Exterior:- Very presentable, with the paint finish much better than most Scimitars. However, there is extensive micro-blistering of the paint, most likely caused by a period in poorly ventilated storage. The overall impression of the car is still very good and it looks really smart, but you can see the finish has blisters at cursory inspection. Thankfully there is minimal stress cracking evident and the body is exceptionally straight and clean, with no nasty damage. Chromework, window surrounds and lights are all equally good, with some age related marring to rear bumper. Doors and bootlid all lock/unlock on the same key. Original 'raised digit' number plates.
Underneath:- Refreshingly honest and original underneath. Sound and straight, with ordinary surface corrosion commensurate with age apparent. Some historic welded repairs completed to a high standard evident at outriggers. Sensibly upgraded with stainless steel fuel tank; stainless exhaust; braided flexible brake lines and cunifer hard lines; and nylon fuel line.
Condition Summary:- In fabulously original, unmolested condition and mechanically excellent having enjoyed extensive work. No known issues - drives exceptionally nicely. Interior all original and in largely superb condition, tobacco vinyl seats in great order, some age cracking to dash instrument panel. Exterior finish and chromework highly presentable but with micro blistering evident to paint. V5C and documents, ignition key, two door / boot keys and two glove box keys present. Please view the detailed pictures for an accurate guide to condition.
In summary, a fabulously unmolested, road tax and MoT exempt Scimitar GTE automatic in sound mechanical order and ready for immediate use.
