So bought myself a couple of presents... the left rear passengerdoor had a manky door catch, so seached ebay , found and fitted a NOS one , after some youtubing how to remove them, finally succeeded. Glad i had help with all the weird hooks and pins... Stupid invisible skrews underneath trim..... Old v.s. New This is why the hingepin didn't get loose :-) Some datestamps inside the doorcard.so many diggerent ones Found this inside the door. Somekind of buildsheet?? Love those little details. Does anybody know how to decyfer them? And some loweringsprings and shocks. Didnt get round fitting them. scored some make up mirrors with lights!! The gauge housing is cracked so here's the new old stock one and of course i dropped my new rear view mirror..... meh.......

Looks like carat 3.6 was right about the door card hook. Wonder why they put so many differing date stamps on it?

After a strange noise with the key in the ignition, but not started yet, I went on a Hunt to to find the culpritt. After removing the aircleaner I found this thing on the back of the carburettor. It humms like an electrisch transformer, but I haven't got a clue what it is. I think some sort of automatisch choke or an idee controller.... Does anyone know exactly what it is? So I can order a new one? Thanks in advance!!

Perhaps try taking it off and giving it a good clean with carb cleaner or similar...

Found this inside the door. Somekind of buildsheet?? Love those little details. Does anybody know how to decyfer them? This is called the datacard. Usually there'll be 2, one with your paperwork and one in the car somewhere - often behind the rear seat. One version had identification for your key so you could get new keys made and the other had that blanked out. It'll give you all the options for you car. www.mercedesmagazine.com/mercedes-magazine-original-content/mercedes-benz-vin-decoder-data-card-info/

Now, the part i dreaded to do, the dashpod. Www says i need "special" and expensive tools to extract the dashpod (and man, they are expensive!) but last night i was putting my youngest to bed, and i was staring at her 'bookshelve carriers"?? and said to myself, hey! that might work!! So into the shed and voila! My special tools for the day!! And they cost nothing :-) bought some extra lightbulbs , some of them are broken , and some of them are really dull, so with the dashpod open, replacing all of the bulbs is a no-brainer Extracting the dashpod was a doddle with my "special tools" sometime youre really scared to start a job, but i turns out to be really easy... 30 seconds and it's out . So , after looking at some youtube clips, i started undooing the screws and took it all apart. 9 screws to hold it all together. But of course i bought the wrong type bulbs fot the dashpod. They come complete with bulbholder and the bulbs are soldered in. You remove them complete with bulbholder by unscrewing/ twisting them, so i ordered the correct ones ( 8 of them) and they get delivered later this day. All together now , and after the bulbs get here , ready to be build in. a Non- Cracked dashpod! YaY !!

So the bulbs got there quicker then i expected! within the our!! Thats a service! duly replaced all the old bulbs for new ones. . Replaced all the bulbs in the switches, i had some spare from my first mistake. Nobody on youtube tells you to brake your wrist in 3 places to reconnect the speedocable, but brute force helped in the end. Reconnected all the plugs on the backside of the dashpod and fitted it back in the hole Succes!! ( and everything works as intended, with no screws left :-) ) next i removed the zebrano panel from the dash ( it's painted metal! ) to replace the heater control unit. it was hotwired in the past and someone butchered the panel with 2 new switches. Undid the big nuts underneath the switches, but the panel would not come undone... 2 little screws, only to be found after removing the ashtray...... After the big nuts removal, changed the bulbs in there too. Heater control unit ( upside down ) pretty un-eventfull. so no pictures taken. just undo the screws, take of the plugs and replace.... Replaced the zebrano panel with an unmollested one from a breakersyard. Bought some new stickers for the control wheels too. Difficult to find , so if anybody needs them , mercedes number A 124 82129 67 paid € 15,- for them happy with the transformation. so much nicer place to be and to look at, without all the extra buttons and wires.

Just in time management.. I learned that skill 30 years ago, but just put it to use recently.. I scratched a rustblister with my fingernail at the jackingpoint in the rear sill and took off a big chunck of underseal. Rust spread out underneat the rubbery stuff and left a rustmark of around 20cm in diameter. Just surface rust, but thats a big piece of rust. Just in Time.... So out with the wirewheel and the spraycan of Brunox rustkiller, and fixed the little curse word. Maybe the other side is better? You guessed it already, just as bad, and just in time.... Glad i fixed it. To celebrate all the rustkilling , i booked a spot in our local " do it yourself garage" to fit the lowering springs i bought a while ago. The W124 Mercedes has a different spring and shock arrangement, so after furious youtubing , i jumped in the deep end and just got on with it. Lovely car to work on! special tools rented at the garage and everything is so accessible. So starting with the car in the air. New shocks vs. ols springs New versus old springs Fitted the front ones, only to find the bumpstops have perished... Picked some up locally, together with an arrangement of springtop rubbers , to level out the rideheight , front and rear rears fitted. You see the spring next to the shock arrangement? 16 inch steels of an S class fitted ( no picture ) with new michelin tyres , and calculated the new tyre size with an online calculator so we do not have a different reading at the speedo. Hope it works out. And finally fitted the 90's S Class wheeltrim i had stored in the loft for years. Proud of my work!! 50MM lowered all around and speedbump proof without scraping!! result!! And a sneaky pickkie at the supermarket carpark. Proud of myself today!!

So, our pre weekender checkover this morning. Topped all the fluids amd checked the brakes etc. Fixed some overdue surface rust and hope everything will hold during our 9 hour trip down to goodwood. Fixed some rust in the corner of the rear lights. There easy enough to reach and unplug to get better access to it all. Love the 80's buildquality.. When the paint was dry, ready to pick up our rental rooftent for the weekender. Bought some roofrails, difficult to find for a w124 sedan. They installedd the tent for us. First carfestival with my 2 daughters. Gonna be an epic time! See you al next weekend!!

These roof top tents are awesome. Schreeuwend expensive but super cool. They are much cheaper here in Australia.
