I blame Peter C for this :-) After binge reading his excellent thread with Mercs and during lockdown number 4 (in Holland), not able to go anywere and our pub closed for the 4th time in 20 months, I felt it was time to follow some of my dreams, before it is too late. I'm getting 46 this year and i've worked 32 of them and now it's leisure time!
30 years ago my mother had a similar Mercedes 200, albeit being the 4 speed diesel version that planted a seed, and never left.
The sheer quality , the big seats and legspace, the chunkyness, the luxury ( after the diesel fiesta ) made i never forgot this type of Mercedes and with this '80's build quality that very car is probably still driving in the north of Africa somewere..
Soooo, of course I stumbled across a fine example of this car on facebook marketplace on a recent insomnia trip.... and being slightly Depressed because closed for the fourth time, depressed because i had to lay off most our staff. 2 of my closest friends ( with pubs) are going out of business and on top of that, our pub kitchen burned out on the 24th of June last year, it's probably a great time to buy myself a small present :-) ( not )
So here it is! An '86 Mercedes E200 petrol , 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual , making a staggering 105 horses! Imported in Holland in 2013. Manual windows , blue cloth interior and seats , 1 electric mirror , NO ROT ! or rust to speak of , lost the rubbers of the exhaust backbox along the way, exhaust is new, some stonechips and some blisters on the doorbottoms , nothing a major service and clean can't fix.
Yesterday it got delivered to our house , because it hasn't been MOT'd for a couple of years so it's not road legal at the moment.
( not a clue why the photo is on it's side...)
Here it's on her temporarely restingplace, untill i make some room in storage.
They painted the door bottom strips white. that's going to be rectified. Jacking points are solid , rubber bungs in the wheelwells are solid , alloys are ok , tyres are new
281000 kilometers , new clean airfilter in the housing , new aux belt already fitted , i'm happy!!
Nice place to be behind the wheel.
The doorpockets are a little frilly , but nothing a hot glue gun can't fix. all the upholstery is fine. No tears and rips.
The central locking mechanism is broken as are the headlight adjusters , so the vacuumpump under the backseat is the first thing looked at soon.
My daughter asked why the radio was fitted upside down. surprise surprise , It wasn't connected to anything and behind the damned thing we found scotchlock heaven,
so thats for a later date. And there are 2 round mystery switches fitted to the dash that i don't recognise and are doing nothing when flicked.. ( i think )
.
So plans are to get it through MOT , general reliable and making it to the Weekender in May. Enough room in the boot for a tent and camping gear and seat 4 people in comfort.
Life is going to be good.....
