Hi all. You may know that I have a e46 B3 Alpina which i love. I have recently had a hankering for a E36 and have seen a green T plate car on Facebook. Its a 318is - which my young daughter could also use, but it has a dreaded auto box. How hard are these to convert to manual, what would i need apart from the gear box itself and how much is the whole conversion likely to cost? Picture for your time.

if its anything like the E34 them its very easy, and well documented on the bmw pages.
e34 needed pedal box assembly (though a pedal swap is possible, the box is missing brackets for the switches)
shift linkage and box, clutch and flywheel, master and slave cylinders, pipe, reservoir and feed pipe.
reverse switch cable, possibly a jumper relay to swap for the auto atart inhibitor relay.

I bought a 318is as a daily driver when I was 19 and kept it for 12 years (it changed from daily driver to very occasional use/showcar and had only just clicked over 70k miles when I sold it). Brilliant car. Massively underrated by many as it wasn't a 6cyl, but would have one over all the 6cyl E36s apart from a top notch 328i Sport or an M3. Was like a "BMW GTi" really. The E30 318is is very sought after now, but obviously a lighter car and far more limited production run model than the E36 equivalent, but still a rising star for me.
As above though regarding the manual conversion. A bit of a list of parts required, but nothing too major and all easily sourced. Would be perfectly happy with a 6cyl E36 with an auto box, but an auto will detract from everything that makes the 318is so great really.
I have new genuine oil filter for one of these if you need it.

yes exactly, if you also send the ecu to enda ward while its out, he will flash the map to the compact cup map, and that unlocks a lot of power and drivability out of the engine.
Ive had a 1600 compact, that i rally, its been a 1600 [originally], 1800, 1900, and a 2000 using a diesel crankshaft, and shric cams. It flew, now its got a volvo b230 engine in it. the cars are fantastic, and defo will be a collectors item soon.
Give chris ransley a call about the parts though, he has it all, and he wont rip you off either.
