I'm trying to find a replacement for the single cylinder non servo (5/8") Escort Mk 1 Master cylinder to upgrade it to a tandem one for safety. The Mk 2 Escorts had tandem cylinders (non servo) but I cannot find a lot of info on the bore sizes.
I would like either a 5/8" - 5/8" tandem or ideally a 5/8" - 0.7" tandem if possible.
Mounting points horizontal.
Can anyone help, or offer an alternative M/C that would fit the horizontal mount on the car?

Not sure if they'll be useful in your situation, but MK2 son had a compbrake catalogue which listed a number of different cylinders and applications?

Escort Mk1 8cwt van used a 'biased' twin circuit master with 0.7 / 0.75 bores front / rear Girling Part no. 64068993 - probably be pricey if you can find one. ![](https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/16grit/2a7702c2522b.jpg)

I found those Andrew but they are all a bit bigger bore than we would like.

Tr7 one is around 0.7", defender one is similar but a bit bigger I think.

I think we are going to struggle to find one small enough ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) May have to stick to single circuit. I have found a reservior extension to give more capacity (and it's transparent so at least you can see the level) so that may have to do as a last resort.

It's not possible to use a fabbed up a reverse cylinder bias box or use / modify a Mk1 Escort RS bias box and run small cylinders?

Everything is possible, but I'm not going down that rabbit hole. I'm restoring a friends car for free, I just preferred safer design brakes but may leave them as they were if there is no 'bolt on' alternative. They have worked perfectly well for 40 years so far so I guess they are ok.

There was a small bore one used on U.S. Market Elans, Kelvedon do a new one but its £250.....
I fitted a new good quality master cyl, a fluid level lamp, Goodridge lines and check it over regularly.

How about an mx5 master cylinder? My brother has one fitted on his Gilbern.

I could never find a new no servo master cylinder for my mk2 so added a servo tower
Land Rover defender ones are common on 2.0 capris. Might be an idea?

The other option is to use a widely available one and move the holes in the bulkhead and pedal up.

Kevins, I'm not altering the bulkhead now, got nearly 2 weeks work in it! The thing is a small bore tandem isn't widely available, they are all bigger bore so would need a new pedal assembly as well.

You can usually re-drill the hole for the push rod in the pedal higher and weld the original up,but yes it would mean cutting the bulkead up. Another option is a remote servo on the 0.7 cyl, you'd probably only need one on the front cicuit on something as light as a pop, I've done this on our minor and the brake balance seems about right.

I'm going to give up on the idea - the current set up works and I'm not looking to do more work on it. It would have been a nice upgrade if it were easy, but 'if it aint broke, don't fix it' seems to apply here I think.

The simple modification to give a small improvement in safety is to fit a level warning switch to the reservoir and a lamp on the dash.

Yes Andrew I agree, the plan is to buy the 'extension' tube they make so there will be 3 new levels of safety if I can make it all work. 1, new extension to give double the amount of fluid in the reservoir. ![](https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blackpopracing/0348d82482e8.jpg) 2, extension is see through so it's easy to keep an eye on levels. 3, fit a low level warning light (as long as I can get one to fit).

That is all I ended up doing on my Elan, car builder solutions sell a switch you can put through a 10mm hole drilled in the cap.
I bought a single circiut master cyl without the integral reservoir (much the same price), you can then screw a larger reservoir into it (or fit it remotely if required)
