I fully support the concept of this build, but I would 100% not have gone the route you have haha I'd be sticking a massive motor in the Falcon wagon and been having a great time by now! This is a serious undertaking and would have to be a seriously 'wanted vehicle' to push it through to completion. Bloomin bold move taking this build on, amazing vehicle to learn on and you have done some epic work so far, but if you don't love it, move it on, or park it in a shipping container in the garden haha This made me smile. Must have looked at the advert on here for the Comet wagon a dozen times and wondered what to sell, would it fit in the workshop etc. all the while in the back of my head I’m thinking “realistically how soon will it be before I’m bored and want to put a 302 in it?” 😂😂 Like many on here I am guilty of having too many projects, but it does mean that when enthusiasm for one starts to wane I can move to something else. As an example when it became clear I wouldn’t have my Sierra ready for last summer I stopped and did a few things to the 100E, as that did work. Upshot of that was I went back to the Sierra this winter with fresh eyes, and the 100E is a bit nicer to drive 🙂 |

Just don't turn up and be like the total donut that I dealt with last week. I think part of this is to blame, the Comet has to go to free up money and space and I really don't want to sell it because it's so bloody good! Mechanically sound, stops on a six pence and pulls like no other car I've owned, in both engine and MILF appeal. I probably would have done it but the car is a bit sentimental and such a rarity I couldn't bring myself to cut it up. I think like you said glenanderson, only I can decide about pulling the plug but I know I'll probably kick myself for not building the most ridiculous Ital ever... Part of me wants to build it to regs but just trailer it and go for the test when I want to street it. The reason this is such a decision for me, is this what I've been offered (not this exact car but to give an idea):  A Holden HQ Ute (badged as a Chevy due to being a South African import), fitted with TH350 box and 350hp Small block Chevy, so all my running gear stuff could be kept, it's also road legal and ready to drive away... all it would needs is a big blower and some decent wheels, and I could get out on track and smash tyres. Life is difficult... haha |

That's not even a consideration. You're into Aussie car culture, and you've the opportunity of a Holden Ute in place of a facelifted Marina, and you're swithering? Seriously?

Yeah from the outside this looks really odd, the Marina is different and it's taken 2 years to get it to this point and it is going to be something special and give me an opportunity to show off some more of my metal works skills and have a crack at some custom elements, it's also easier to get parts for the Marina and the club are a good bunch (well, until they find out it's getting butchered...). I bought it because it was cheap (I should have learned from the countless other cheap classics this is a dumb thing to do) and I just like an underdog, I also LOVE peoples reactions from disgust to laughing within the same sentence!  I still can't get over how perfectly a 285/30 R18 sits in the rear arches, once I do the tubs it'll look like it was always meant to be! |

I totally understand man. I have been in a very similar situation. I traded some work for either parts to build a very special race engine ( a aluminum block 400 cubic inch SBC based Donovan, steel bottom end ), or a Pantera parts car.  The Pantera would have made a very cool racecar, but I was way too deep into my Capri project already ( years of fabwork into it, but not something that was sellable in the state that it was in. ( so realistically, I would have had to scrap it ) I chose the Donovan... So don't take anything I said as advise, or even as being helpful in any way...  |

A 351 was available from the factory if it's an X series although only in Fairmont guise on the last ones Okay before we get too carried away, I own a 1960 Mercury Comet Wagon, not a Falcon, which is for sale:  It's got a 3-speed manual and inline 6 lump, but being pre '65 there were differences between these and the V8 versions meaning it would be an excessive P.I.T.A to convert it and it's one of 18,000 produced and with no Comet specific repair panels available using it as a burnout car was always out the question. I also like cruising round in it and being mistaken for the Ghostbusters (jokes, I HATE when people say that, cheeses me right off!) Back to the Ital, I did maybe an hour or two on it and that seems to have topped up the enthusiasm so I'll have a good go at it tomorrow and see where I get to. |

Love the Comet. Pleased that you're keeping it stock and enjoying it. It's mostly stock, shaved handles and an inch off the front springs (was done before I got it) and a custom centre console to save putting holes in the dash for accessory switches. It just needs a new home! |

Good news on the Ital! That Comet is a gorgeous thing. I'm still undecided. The Comet is a beauty of a boat, I'll be sad to see it go but I have a Beetle which is also a cruiser and I'm fed up of always having cruisers, I want to go fast and cause mischief haha! |

Totally get that, a bit of variety helps you appreciate the stuff you enjoy that bit more and I'm not sure you could get to further ends of the scale than a cruiser bug and a mental Ital.

The Ute's cool, but it's not going to simultaneously bemuse, amuse and irritate pretty much every car scene group out there in the way the Ital will. There's going to be nothing quite like it. Look at it this way, in 30 years time when a group of middle aged (and a bit) car guys are talking about cars from "back in the day" on whatever the equivalent of Facebook is then, the Holden won't be the one that gets remembered... But if you want a car to actually drive the Holden will be an awful lot less effort for something that's probably just as good as the Ital will be |

I want to get all my thoughts out to the audience though. This is my conundrum. I bought the Ital because it was the closest resemblance to a Holden Gemini, but it was one of those things where I wanted to build it properly not really an English version, and I definitely wasn't about to put a Rover V8 in whatever I'd use as a base car, but getting hold of a proper Aussie vehicle was out of the budget and wouldn't be wise as parts, while available, cost a fortune once imported. The Holden would be a get in and start almost immediately to get seat time but I'd probably wimp out as I'll end up being too precious about it. Whereas the Ital I'll be precious because I've built it and spent a fortune and don't want to break it, but that's motorsport so I need to get used to it. I also just want to drive, I feel like I've spent years of my life building cars that aren't fully what I want and life's too short, I want to go fast, make noise and smoke tyres right now haha! But you can't have everything so I need to weigh up options. A life goal would be to become a 'known' car builder, the king of 'Q' plates and burnouts. Not famous as such, but just known, (dis-)respected and remembered. Have a reputation that opens doors and opportunities but means I can still have a semi-normal life too. After all, life isn't about living forever, but creating something that does. Being a lazy wotsit and taking the Holden route is less likely to achieve this though and in my head, the Hot Rod should hopefully make an impact and get the name Talbot associated with cars again. Which will then be followed by the burnout car, whatever it is. I know I'll get vastly more sense of achievement from doing the Ital but I also worry I'll be too old to have any chance of being decent behind the wheel of it. I mean the dream would be build the Ital and get invited to Summernats, but I doubt that would ever happen as I'm not a massive PR draw like Cleetus McFarland and TOAST. I have a few things I'd like to build, all very different but I know the Ital (or Holden) would be a keeper along with my Beetle and the others would come and go, being filmed as they progressed. In a perfect world I'd build what I like and get paid to do it but we don't live in that world (yet). Oh I do have some progress on it though!!  Drivers side A post is ready to weld on!! It's going to be hard to get into summernats without having a car in Australia and doing the other events to try and get a golden ticket for Summernats, let alone being invited for the Wildcard qualifiers I would think. |

Sorry I mean in a sense to Farmtruck and Azn or Cleetus where they were invited over as more demonstrations than entrants, if they can get invited then surely with enough of a reputation surrounding the car at least, I don't see why that wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility? I think the main issue wouldn't be getting in, it would be getting a car over that wet bit between us and them haha! |
