A proven show winning Austin Allegro 1.3L with an incredible 4,735 miles.
EQUIPMENT
All steel unitary construction, underbody protection, recessed door-handles, anti-burst locks, Hydragas suspension, laminated windscreen, rear extractor vents, black plastic stone guards, electric washers, two-speed wipers, flick wipe, exterior door mirrors, black radiator grille, matt black capped bumpers, front spoiler, insulated bulkhead, fog light, childproof rear door locks, safety steering column, coat hooks, twin parcel trays, warning lamps for ignition, low oil pressure flasher hazard lamps, handbrake-on, side lamps-on, choke-out, high beam, dual circuit brake failure. Heated rear window, reclining front seats, rear folding armrest, illuminated clock and cigar lighter, lockable glovebox, locking fuel cap. Dealer Accessories; Mud flaps, Vital Rustproofing.
EXTERIOR
Rarely can such a car be described as factory perfect but this absolutely original, super low mileage Austin Allegro 3 is as close to a showroom fresh example as feasibly possible. Finished in Champagne, (Code BLVC 248), the electrophoretically bonded paintwork remains pristine having been garaged from new and shines fabulously. Factory imperfections well known to exist at point of production are reassuringly visible along with some conscientious tiny touched-in marks. Distinguishing L features include Allegro L badges, double coachline and smart matt black window trim, all perfect. The underside is bitumastically coated and the sills are wax injected, just as it left the factory at Longbridge. The Vital Rustproofing guarantee certificate is included as was applied by the dealer two days prior to registration. All the glass is factory with the supplying dealer rear and front screen stickers along with the Supercover sticker and number plate etching. The ultimate collectors Allegro and with unrepeatable credentials.
INTERIOR
Cropped nylon seat facings finished in Sorrel, wall to wall carpeting and padded door panels with flush fitting handles are all immaculate. The instrumentation, switch gear and column stalks are all operational with a bright clear appearance thanks to garage storage from new. The headlining is unmarked and all plastics immaculately preserved with the soft touch steering wheel showing prominent veins. The exposed metal work in the boot area has no scuffs with the boot mat and spare wheel cover spotlessly clean. An unused tool bag is correctly secured in the boot area. The interior of this Allegro is completely original and almost impossible to fault unless you are a new car critique!
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The legendary and time proven A-Series engine of 1275cc displacement is robust, simple and has excellent parts availability. Producing an ample 54bhp, this Allegro can hold its own in modern traffic. The engine bay is absolutely of show winning standard and will amaze onlookers with bonnet-up exhibitionists. Fragile labels, stickers and PDI dabs are all present and this model will absolutely set the standard others will strive to achieve whilst still being factory original! The four speed hydraulically operated all synchromesh gearbox delivers light and exact changes.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Original pressed steel disc wheels with full width wheel trims have no damage and recent 145/80 R13 tyres have replaced the originals. The Hydrogas suspension system is free from leaks and has recently pumped to allow the car to sit level and correct, and more importantly ride as it should. The dual-line diagonally split hydraulic brake system with 9.68in front discs and servo stop the car safe and steady.
HISTORY FILE
Prepare to be amazed with a phenomenal history file. Purchased new on the 26th October 1979 as one of the very first Allegro 3 models, Mr Graham Fones placed his order with Austin dealer, All Electric Group Ltd in Pebble Mill. The model was so new the dealer gave him the previous Allegro brochure and price list! He purchased the vehicle on the BL Limited Employee Car Plan entitling him to a 20% discount and the new car invoice totals £3062. Grahams’s Uncle, Victor Fones, had worked at Longbridge for 21 years in Car Assembly Building 1, (CAB1), and was involved in the actual assembly of the Allegro and the Mini at this facility. All documentation, leaflets and price lists for the BL Employee Car Purchase Scheme are included in the comprehensive history file. The car lived with Graham 5 miles from the assembly plant for the next 40 years until 2019. During this time he had the car submitted for its annual MOT until 2002 when his confidence in driving suffered. As a paying member of the Allegro Owners Club he decided to sell the car to a trusted member and contacted Rev Colin Corke, the Chairman of the Allegro Owners Club. Rev Corke, (who also lives in Longbridge), purchased the car and on its first British Leyland Rally it won Best Allegro! With further dedication from renown Concours expert and Club Member of 17 years, Tom Morley, this car is astonishing.
Absolutely all documentation, spare keys and even delicate tags and labels remain with the car. The British Motor Heritage Trust Certificate confirms specification and all Supercover documentation is present. Period brochures, road test reports and even photos of the Fones family with the car are included. A road Atlas from 1979 is included along with a period tin of Champagne touch-up paint!
An unrepeatable opportunity to buy surely one of the best unrestored examples with astonishing history, 4,735 miles and just two owners both of whom lived within 5 miles of the cars birth place!
MOT Jan 2023, HPI clear.
