EXTERIOR
Finished in a resplendent two-tone colour scheme of Shell Grey over Midnight Blue, the glorious paint has a rich fullness helping to accentuate the elegant shape perfectly. Beautifully detailed in all respects with vast expanses of mirror finish chrome virtually unblemished except for some minor pitting to the boot handle. All trim, badges and decorative features remain correctly fitted as intended by Bentley master coachbuilders and the glass to all areas is unmarked. Panel gaps are pin straight and the stressed steel skin construction has no undulations. The underside is clean and protected to allow this classic Bentley majesty and grandeur to be enjoyed.
INTERIOR
A splendid and luxurious interior greets both driver and passengers and offers an unrivalled level of perfection. Sumptuous English hide in Grey, (Code VM3393) grace wide seats with no damage and fitted pile carpets are perfectly clean protected by thick Royal Navy over rugs. Along with the soft leather, the headlining is original and the French Walnut veneer is beautifully preserved and not bleached. Original luxury features such as twin picnic tables to the rear and personal mirrors add a touch of class and all gauges, switch gear and controls work with precision. ‘His Masters Voice’ is inscribed on the original operational radio with balance control but the clock is not functional. This Bentley is built by craftsman whose skill and careful attention to detail is evident throughout and will certainly meet the demands of the motoring enthusiast and connoisseur wanting the finest.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Bentley S2 is designed by the same engineers who make the Rolls-Royce and is powered by the then new eight cylinder vee engine of 6230cc. Matching numbers and made almost entirely in aluminium, it weighs no more than the in-line six cylinder engine it replaced and produces 185hp, enough to waft to a top speed of 113mph and 0-60mph in 12.1 seconds. A Rolls-Royce automatic gearbox as fitted from new providing four forward speeds with over-riding hand and kick down speed control. A combination born from Bentleys quest for perfection.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The steel 15inch wheels have Bentley embossed full width chrome hub-caps and finish the prominent exterior impact of the vehicle with only one trim having light marks. Avon Turbospeed R/R-B 8.20 V15 tyres with ample tread are fitted including the spare. All small and large tools are present and complete including the jack, tyre pump and working inspection lamp correctly located in the lower boot storage section. Servo-assisted brakes with hydraulic operation at the front and combined hydraulic and mechanical operation at the rear are duplicated with twin master cylinders and 11inch cast iron drums with peripheral cooling which offer sufficient stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
This stunning 1961 Bentley S2 Standard Saloon has the Construction & Test Records issued by The International Club for Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts leaving no doubt to the provenience of this example. Supplied by Bentley Dealers Weybridge Autos Ltd on the 15th June 1961 to Bestmore Tool & Edge Tool Co. Ltd for the use of Mrs M Best. The build sheet clearly reveals the specification with the only change being Shell Grey over Black to Shell Grey over Midnight Blue on this matching numbers example. The record confirms the original purchase price of £4,195 plus purchase tax of £1,776 and that ownership transferred to J.Wharton Shipping Limited in June 1962. A collaboration of receipts and invoices from Bentley specialists accompany the history file alongside some previous MOT certificates and confirms long-term owner and Chartered Wealth Manager, Paul Fellerman, took possession in 1995. The latest enthusiast is custodian William Harker since May 2002. Recently recommissioned with detailed remarks summarising works carried out, this really is a marvellous example of British motoring ingenuity and workmanship and the epitome of Bentley prestige and indulgence.
MOT November 2022, Tax exempt, HPI Clear.
