Is anywhere really that bad now? As bad as an ex-pit village in the late 80's/early 90's?
I went to Newstead/Annesley back then and it was like going back to the 1920's, not just back a decade or two.
On a happier, and more relevant, note... My old Grandad was the village Bobby based just down the road from your family estate, in Everton, back in the late 40's and/or early 50's.
ISTR his beat was Everton, Gringley-on-the-Hill, Mattersey, and possibly Clayworth - all on a clunky police bike and checking in to 'control' (or whatever) from each village telephone box.
I would have to ask my mum for more accuracy on the dates/villages, but that will set off her reminisces of an idyllic small village childhood living in the Police House. At least until Grandad was transferred to Arnold in Nottingham, then Mansfield (he must have really upset 'them' when he turned down the funny handshake).
He was originally a poor Sheffield lad, met my Nana (a Land Army girl) while he was up in Scotland driving munitions trucks (later across Europe), and was quite open that the reason he become a copper was for the police house that came with the job. Helps that he was a big tall* ugly bu**er too! I certainly wouldn't have wanted a clip 'round t'ear from him.
Wish I had known him better - he was apparently a bit of a character who did his own thing. For years the family transport was a motorbike and sidecar outfit - wife pillion and 2 kids in the sidecar. That includes trips back to see Nana's family in the north of Scotland!
* I think 6'4" - a big unit back then?

I can remember when Shameless first came out, posh people were outraged and said it was an unreaslistic representation of council areas. I was sat watching it at my mates house in the middle of a Sheffield Council estate thinking this is quite accurate lol.

Heavan & Hell is a fantastic album waaay past No 5 I’m in the ‘Dio era sabbath should not have been called black sabbath’ camp. It’s not bad music, but is very different to the earlier work- too different to carry the name in my eyes. I’d have had more respect for them if they’d renamed (like they later did for the reunion stuff) but iommi had the rights and he was damn well gunna keep trading off that name! I love em all for different reasons, seen them over 20 times with every line up 😀 massive fan, they basically ‘invented’ heavy metal. Anyway sorry for going off topic

I love Purple & Zep, but no one had heard anything like that opening track of the first Sabbath album & NIB. Not to mention Sweet Leaf, Into the Void etc etc they were like NOTHING before & it literally changed my life (musically at least)

not going down that rabbit hole It did trigger a memory though, around 1968 I can remember going to Kirkcaldy YM to see a group called Band of Joy, two of the members were Robert Plant and John Bonham

Less of this greebo stuff, back on track 😂
On radio Sheffield the other day they had the new Sheffield mayor on, thoroughly nice chap. The question of how to raise the profile of South Yorkshire/North Derbyshire came up and the presenter said something that summed it up for me.
When we're in our own villages and towns etc we slag them off, its not until we're in somewhere like Lancashire then we praise what we have, no matter how bad!!

For everyone/anyone getting slightly uppity at *their* town getting ribbed for being a bit sh1te- you seem to have missed the whole tone of the thread, nowhere is exempt from such derision 😉 That's ok then, deride away.

My grandads brother lived in Everton so it’s entirely possible my family new your family. Everton is a very similar village to where I live, And I still pass through there often enough, my favourite mountain bike haunt is just near there. And yes, there’s definatley places tucked away that are still that bad. I keep a top 10 of the worst ones I’ve been to 😂

I found ‘ideal’ pretty close to the bone for a comedy as well. Also ‘Grimsby’ is basically a documentary…

I dunno, I’ll always say donny is a dump 😂 Thing is I’m far enough away for it to not quite feel like my town. I nearly always go to Retford instead, which really feels on the up at the mo with loads of new places opening. It’s down to having a lot of rich. Illages surroubding it that need a mid size market town nearby. If I need a bigger town I go to Sheffield, which again after years in the mire feels on the up.

I just realise that when this thread started, I was still a Northerner and retro car owner, when the first post on this page was made, I had sold my just-about-retro Lotus and was in the process of emptying my house. Then, after more than 13 years in Sheffield I left the North and the UK for good, and I don't even own a car anymore. There's no real point to this post except to say that mentions of all these places in the North evoke fond memories of a region that wasn't perfect and certainly not rich, but nonetheless far from grim. There were good people, there are great memories of trackdays in Cadwell, Donington and Blyton, there's the beautiful Peak District and other bits of nature further north, and good colleagues I've said good-bye to. Conditions in my sector and at my employer were turning grim though, and the less said about the political and economic developments under way since 2016 the better, but I won't remember the North as grim. Sorry for the distraction / thread derailment, and I wish you continuous good luck with your fresh start Dez !

A bit late to this thread, but thought I’d say what a great read it’s been.
I’m “southern” born and bred, really, Canterbury originally, then a stint in south London, followed by East Sussex, then Plymouth for Uni before returning to Kent. I’m in Dover now and, like someone else said earlier, I can see France from my window on a clear day.
My mum was a Scot though, and the Anderson half of my dad’s family moved south in the late 1700s looking for work as a result of the highland clearances. I have always enjoyed the time I have spent in Scotland on family holidays and left to my own devices I think I’d definitely migrate north if I could. I have two friends who have moved away from the south, one to Kettering (the midlands I know), and the other to north Wales. I am at a point in my life though where it makes sense to stay where I am until retirement, at which point we are seriously considering a move away from Kent to somewhere (anywhere) else.

When are we going to get the next chapter?? Tbh each time I come back to this thread it’s with the intention of doing so, and every time something has happened that has eaten into the time/my headspace for doing it. Hopefully I’ll get it done pretty soon as it’s definitely holding up the l story now.
