This is, to some extent, going to be a thread about doing up an old house.
It is also going to include some family history, personal identity, and just give me a place to write down some things I’ve not got anywhere else to do so. Sorry to say for all you southerners it’s also going to end up as a bit of a love letter to the north, but how it took me years to realise that’s how I really felt.
Now, let’s set the scene. I grew up in a not particularly affluent area of the north in the late 80s and early 90s. For those familiar with the don valley area, it will need no introduction. For everyone else, it runs from the steelworks on the industrial fringes of Sheffield and Rotherham, out to where it literally disappears into a swamp out past the isle of axholme, in the carrland (peat moors). It’s a rural area typified at the time by pit villages and coal mining, quarrying, peat extraction and agriculture. It’s an area that although constantly lumped in with it, often had little to do with Doncaster (it’s administrative town) on a day to day basis. Retford, Gainsborough and Worksop are all just as close, and often favoured as the local ‘town’ by residents. I didn’t really appreciate it in my youth, and although it’s a landscape heavily scarred by industry, it still manages to be beautiful, historic, and fairly tranquil in a lot of areas.
I’ve got a lot of strings to pull together before we get onto the house itself, so in the meantime make a brew, don your flat cap and slippers, and maybe watch a few episodes of last of the summer wine (the writer lived in my village for quite a few years), the league of gentlemen, or phoenix nights (set wrong side of t’pennies, but SO period correct) to get you in the mood. Those programmes should show you that looking back, growing up on the right side of the Pennines back then really could not be taken seriously 😂
In the meantime, yes that is where the thread title came from. I feel the breakdown at the end where it slides into Jerusalem is me kinda coming of age and realising that the north really is the best end of the country, although it took me a good few years in the south to realise it.

Looking forward to this Dez. I used to work with Dee Dars (Sheffielders) who were always going on about God's Country. I used to say that's why he put Derbyshire next door so you'd got summat nice to look at.

I remember the "It's Grim Up North" graffiti at the beginning of the M1 - I am pretty sure it predates the song. As a dyed in the wool southerner I shall look forward to your recollections and memories of your area.

I was born in Southsea (Portsmouth) so couldn't get much further south but always like visiting the North.
I'm sure this will be an interesting and informative thread.

In for the ride, lived in Retford for a year working at Bridon Ropes but don't hold that against me ! Having started out in Stoke, been brought up in Hertfordshire gone to Nottingham and Newcastle for a few years and now down to Somerset one thing I can say is that the variety in the UK is fantastic. I've gone more and more rural over the years and appreciate the slightly less stressful life this brings. James

As a Northumbrian, that area is the Midlands.
Lived and worked down south in Rotherham for while - Robert Jenkins.
I well recall the days when the Tinsley Viaduct was often obscured by a noxious brown fug of NOx, PM2.5 and 'stuff' that was never successfully identified. Headlights on the M1 in the daytime.
Then there's that weird space-time hole that the Independent Soviet Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire's capital Sheffield inhabits. Where-ever you start from it's uphill to where you want to go. BUT, when you retrace your steps it's STILL uphill.

James I always thought it funny Bridon had the Retford plant, when their main plant was (and still is) only 20 miles away in Doncaster. I assume it was part of a buyout of some other company at some time. I actually really like Retford, it’s a nice little town, my parents always used to favour it as the town to go to to do the weekly shop etc. so I used to spend quite a bit of time there, mostly in the massive bike shop that was an old mill or something, as I was well into bmx and mtb at the time. When I was a bit older we used to favour the pubs there too, as they were quieter and quite a few had pool tables. I find it much nicer than any of the surrounding towns, it’s just big enough to be able to get most things you need but still quite compact.

BUT, when you retrace your steps it's STILL uphill. You sound like penski 😂 Still Closer to London that the Scottish boarder is his favourite line. But yes, it is the south of the north. As with the KLF, I still include Derbyshire and a fair bit of Lincolnshire as the north, this is because of the attitude the south has towards the area. I went to uni in Sheffield, as well as an untold number of gigs at the leadmill and corp, and many days well wasted at the bmx track up crooks and the skatepark on devonshire green. Even now I see it as an odd place that I’m not sure if I 100% like. And yes apart from the MASSIVE hill back down from crooks past the uni, (where you can reach terminal velocity on a bmx) everywhere is uphill. Have you seen they dropped the cooling towers at tinsley, the ones that were almost touching the motorway? I’m kinda sad they’re gone tbh, they were such a landmark.

I'll be intrigued to see where you go with this, I've lived all my life in Chelmsford, when I grew up here in the 70's it was a relatively small rural town with a cattle market etc and virtually everyone worked in the local industries (Marconi, EEV and Hoffmanns bearings), now all the local industries are gone and it's just another London commuter town with all the pushy aggressive types that brings, when I retire in 3 years time we are thinking of moving away somewhere quieter.

I was born in the Home Counties and spent most of my life around the Essex/Suffolk and Sussex areas, bar one year attending an aborted University course in Hull.
Loved that place, and (most of) the people in it. My Grandad lived in Sheffield for a few years so that's really my only other link oop North.
Following with interest 👍

I currently live around the north Essex/south Suffolk area, and have lived down here for about 15 years or so including a stint in Southend. Although that move has been good to me, I have watched this area change as southern Essex filled up with exactly the type of people you refer to as the rising prices in London have pushed them further out. Colchester is now much the same as Chelmsford in that respect. The thing I’ve realised is I kinda want to live somewhere that sort of person finds undesirable. This is a bit tricky if you rely on a place having any sort of reliable infrastructure, so your whole life has to change if you want to avoid ‘em.
