This POS Everything broke. Often more than once. Parts were available but mostly dreadfully poor quality. I overpaid for it massively. It had been 'rebuilt' really really badly by the previous owner and the paint was falling off. The exhaust was impossible to seal and it never stopped filling with water. The worst crime was that on the odd occasion it was working well and on a good road it was really, really fun, so I ended up keeping it and spending way to much on it. In the end I threw in the towel, sold it for over a grand less than I bought it for, let alone the amount spent keeping it alive. Poor bloke who bought it (drove down from Scotland!) had a wheel fall off on the way home and then the head gasket go. Hopefully it has been scrapped.

This bloody piece of british engineering!!! Bought it knowing it had plenty spent on it, only 81000 miles and in general good condition. Within six months of less than 1000 miles, the brake calipers needed replacing, new tyres as I did'nt spot how perished they were, cooling issues and then the auto box said goodbye. I was warned not to go down the RR route but ignored the advice and as a result was a tidy sum of dosh lighter! Yes, I hate these overated turds!

I really should not have laughed about the poor fella from Scotland but I did. Possibly it was the matter of fact way you worded it. Top post! This is probably why I am deeply reluctant to go on epic road trips to buy a car.

I've got two, a vw golf, and a Honda crv, neither were particularly bad, but both were so sinfully dull it was unreal. That being said, I hired a brand new Toyota aygo last week, man alive that was dull. I really struggle to believe that there is anyone who's bought one of those things and is happy with their purchase, honestly, I get more excitement looking at my fridge freezer.

I have owned over 800 cars, from £20 to £20K, and the one that stands out from the crowd as being the worst of the lot in every possible way was.. the Dodge Charger that I imported in 1999. Yeah its a beautiful shape, but that is IT, that is where the compliments stop. It was unergonomic, loud, unreliable, leaky, rusty, thirsty, uncomfortable, you couldn't see out of it, and you couldn't even get to the spark plugs on it. I went through 3 engines in that thing too. The factory body panel alignment on it was atrocious. The floorpan to sill join was about 3/4 of an inch different between the front and the back. It was the most expensive car I have ever had too. Strangely the cheap beat up Fury I bought, made in the same year, I liked, and is still with me 18 years later.

Difficult one for me to answer as I tend to be attracted to what are, essentially, rubbish cars. Plenty of people thought my lada was rubbish, but it was a genuinely good car. My mg Maestro though. THAT was rubbish. Never really ran right, once it started to rust it started everywhere with alarming speed, and doorhandles had a habit of coming off in your hand. And it seemed to rattle everywhere. Looked good though. I'd never ever have another one.

My worst would be this, a Saab 9-3 Aero HOT. I think a large part of the issue for me was buying the wrong example of a decent car. Also, I was still quite fresh to working on cars and knowing about mechanics so I ended up paying out for a lot of work. I bought it from Birmingham having viewed it at night. Couple of cardinal sins there already I don't want to tar everyone from Birmingham trying to sell a car with the same brush, and to be fair I think the bloke selling the car was a decent guy who wasn't very mechanically minded, but before and since I've seen some proper ropey cars come out of the country's second city so I generally avoid them now. It had had an engine swap as the first had succumbed to oil sludging and starvation issues common to the B205/B235 engines, I thought this would be a good thing. The swap was a bit sketchy, engine covers missing, but could have nearly ended in a fireball as the fuel hose to the injectors popped off one morning as I was trying to start it. My aforementioned lack of experience in cars at the time missed the fact that the timing chain was rattling away, so ended up paying for a new one to be fitted. The bulkhead was cracked like on many 9-3s, so that needed repairing at a cost again. I spent a bit on lowering springs and other bits and bobs which I mostly ended up paying to be fitted. I got it remapped and it was pretty strong but it was boost spiking and I never got to the bottom of the reason why. The clutch started slipping due to an oil leak from the engine I think, so another cost. Not long before I sold it, I found a CV boot had failed and spread grease everywhere and the inner wings were rotten, so I finally cut my losses. It went off to become a donor car for a flooded Viggen up in Cumbria. I did actually do a good amount of miles in the car, and I liked its big bumpered styling but it was so costly to keep happy. Now that I've got a little more mechanical nous and a driveway to work on, it probably wouldn't be half as bad. Amusingly, some 5 odd years later, the personalised plate is still up for sale on ebay

Over 800 really?? Even at 800 that would be 20 cars every year for 40 years is that possible? I believe I am on number 841. I had 32 cars at once at one point, now down to a far more sensible 18. I won't give a full list.. but I've had 11 Avengers, 29 Datsun 180Bs, about 30 Peugeots, countless Berlingos, Almeras, 120Ys, I've even had five Plymouth Furys, a Mustang, an LTD, Ford pickups, Chevy pickup, 3x Dodge pickups, 7 Range Rovers, Series Landys, many CR-Vs, Civics... You get the idea.

I have 2 that spring to mind, a cavalier turbo and a Nissan Navara NP300 I think the Nissan takes the prize as it was new and total dogshite, it broke down a ridiculous amount adblue faults.
The cav wasn’t great either with a porous head and transfer box problems, was a mint body though with hindsight I should have packed it away and fixed it when I could afford to.

The worst car I've had was a BMW Z3, don't get me wrong it was a great car to drive (even in 1.9 form).
But by God the one I had was completely fecked. I'd have another, but it would have to be the 2.8.

I have two that come to mind.
I bought for some long-forgotten reason a 3-yr old Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3 1.8 back in the 90's. What a bucket that was!
Slow, noisy, lifeless engine combined with bland looks and uninspired handling makes it one of the worst decisions I ever made. Despite being only 3 years old, it was already rusty!! Hated it as soon as I took ownership of it. Don't ask me what I was thinking, I genuinely don't know.
Second one will be a bit controversial; a Mk4 XR3i Cabriolet. In fact, I've had several of these but they were, without exception, horrible. Absolutely rock-hard suspension combined with hilarious scuttle shake made them a real chore to drive, and I never really liked the CVH engine either. Quite why anyone would want to put a high-power engine in one is beyond me; they were bad enough with what little HP they came with.
Conversely, I really liked the tin-top XR3/XR3i's that I had in spite of the CVH.

Fiesta Ghia, the sad face shape. Ex-wife bought it. When I drove it I hated the way it felt. Jacked it up and found both front suspension arms were cracked and flexing. Fixed it then flogged it. Nasty little thing it was.

probably a pug 405 diesel estate 1.9 xud, a distress buy from a mate cos I needed a car that could tow, it was a spare car and not in use, it hardly ever run properly, air in the diesel all the time, then its pump went, a dear thing back in the day, it ran ok with a used pump fitted but then it started pushing coolant out, to the point it became unusable, I did try to attempt to take it apart to change the head gasket, but it was just too much work once I discovered a lot of the parts that needed taking off were round the back of the engine [which tilts backwards] and I didnt have enough knowledge or patience to carry on and winter had set in, binned.
it was a lovely drive on the odd occasion it was going ok. but it wasnt to be.

Sometime in the early 90s I bought the last car through an auction 40 miles from home as I needed something to get home in!
Crossing the block, it didn't look too bad, a Pageant Blue 79 Maxi 1750, not too many miles, new tyres all round and an MOT written out that morning. I parted with £250 and wandered round to the car park to collect it.
Unlocked the door, sat down and the drivers seat back collapsed. Then the battery was flat. A jumpstart from the auction staff sorted that, though it sounded a bit growly at the bottom end. The handbrake lever did nothing much as the floor was split all round it. So much for a fresh MOT. The tyres were all cheap remoulds but at least had air in them.
It didn't seem to have much power to start with, by the time I was halfway home it was losing power badly and struggling on the many hills. The N/S/F wheel bearing was louder than the (knocking) engine. About 10 miles from home it gave up the ghost and threw a rod out the side. I rousted a mate from the pub and he dragged me in the rest of the way to my workshop. The next couple of weeks saw it get a second hand engine, gearbox, battery, N/S driveshaft and hub/bearing, O/S CV joint, drivers seat, plus new brakes all round and welding repair to the tunnel for the handbrake. The following weekend I was due to go south 100 miles or so for a busman's holiday/working weekend on a friends Triumphs. On the Friday afternoon I filled the tank and flooded the forecourt cos the tank leaked! this was the final straw, I used my Firenza for the weekend and when I got back, I put another tank in it and put it in the paper, sold it before anything else broke!
Think it would have been cheaper to get a taxi back from that auction!

Worst, without doubt, was the Nova saloon we bought when my wife passed her test.
Everyone else agreed too because by christ was it hard to sell.

A mid 90's lwb 2.4 petrol frontera, I wouldnt wish one of those piles of depression on my worst enemy.
Also an 85 Toyota mr2, I can't believe these are all bad, id like to believe these are actually pretty decent but the one I had was pure garbage.

Googled image, but one of these: It was fitted with the old skoda 1.3 iron-block engine. Slow to the point of being dangerous in my opinion. Also noisy, crashy, damp, and handled like a shopping trolley full of coal. Its only real saving grace was that it was cheap. I imagine it would have been marginally better in VAG 1.6 or 1.9d guise. I took one for a test drive - was only 300 quid, had trouble keeping up with pushbikes! I thought it was an intake issue, but didn't realise it was factory spec

Undoubtedly
Sadly
A car I ordered new, up-specced and possibly the most looked forward to in my life.
Ordered it also “for my dad” as he always felt driving a Mercedes Benz meant you had gone the extra mile etc.
Anyway.
2006 Mercedes Benz C230 with the 2.5litre V6 petrol engine. 204bhp and sports pack. What a spectacular POS
Regular break downs, visits to the dealers etc.
Ride was harsh and unpleasant on black leather upholstery and sports pack, compared to the Diesel 150 GTi Golf it replaced.
