I can’t get my head around why my car would be running so low. This just happened suddenly and has never been an issue before.
Runs and idles okay, feels a bit down on power. After an hour of driving and the last 40 miles of that on the motorway doing 70mph the maximum the engine would get to was 40 degrees.
Popped the bonnet to see if anything was going on and what I am assuming is the air con pipe was frozen white.
Fans on full would blow out hot air but seriously down on power. Basically feels like it’s not throwing any air into the cabin.
Usually it’s too much!
I can’t believe it’s a thermostat issue, when we stopped at traffic lights the temperature literally went down to nothing.
Anyone had similar experiences?

This glowing white pipe is usually silver

Are both cooling fans working when the a/c is on? Are you sure it's running that low as the VAG temp senders are almost a service item.

The air con system is a bit strange in the mk4 golf. There is no way to really put it on other than turn the temperature right the way down as it’s got a fancy climate control system that just makes everything more complicated than needs be.
Operating temp I can’t really be sure. I’m just going off where the gauge is sitting which after 40 miles at 70mph was still sitting at 40 degrees.
When we hit 30mph roads again it dropped to 10 and when stopped for a couple of minutes parked down to nothing.

Should have said that we never actually turned the temp down on the heater system and as far as I could tell the air con should not have been on. It was on max heat.
The fans were running very underpowered and blowing hot albeit a trickle of air.

Assuming you've got the digital climate, the a/c also comes on if you press the windscreen demist button. To switch the a/c on or off you simply press the ECO button, with the a/c running both engine fans should be running too, if they're not then it's likely the fan relay has packed in. For the sake of <£15 I'd chuck a new sender in just to be sure it's working.

Thanks xbl Do you know why this would make the engine run cold?

It may well be running normally but the sender is feeding duff info to the gauge.

Cheers, will start here and see what happens.
Can’t believe an engine would be running that cold, the part i really done get it why the fans that blow the air inside the cabin at so underpowered with it.
Not sure how these can be connected.

there's 3 (or 4!) temperature senders, engine to ecu, engine to dash (may be the same as the ecu)
exterior, interior.
if the engine really is running that cold (with a vag tdi, quite possible!) I'd change the thermostat first.

Those smaller engines in the Golf and Polo have a horrid thermostat setup on the end of the cylinder head above the bellhousing. And the stat sticks open in the plastic housing as they warp That would be my first thing to check out anyway

Cheers both. It’s a 1.6 petrol which is why I didn’t think it would be possible to run that cold even with the thermostat open.
Thermostat was my first thought I just don’t get why that pipe is freezing over. What would that have to do with the thermostat and why is the fan speed within the cabin so slow on full.
I’m thinking ECU fault because it’s electrical.

The frozen pipe could be caused by; lack of airflow due to weak interior fans, compressor control fault (running all the time), expansion valve blocked, evaporator temperature sensor fault, low refrigerant and/or excessive moisture in the system.
I'd get it looked at by an AC specialist, and I wouldn't be surprised if your low engine temperature issue disappears once it's fixed.

Thank you.
This is along the lines of what I was thinking because of how cold the engine is telling me it’s running.
A/C and thermostat looks the way to go.
