So here it is, my 1985 CX GTI Turbo. Keen observers may have seen my other GTI T2 resto-mod-thing build come together, and that means that my utterly lovely old black one has to go, I can’t have 2!
Its a Series 1 1/2 car, meaning the updated body and interior(Series 2) but with the non intercooled engine from the Series 1. They only made this model for about 6months so it’s a rare beast among rare beasts.
I’ve owned this car for about 4 years and I’ve had enough of them to know what needs doing, so here’s what I’ve done in my ownership. Full stainless exhaust system (nice subtle deep note and more engine response). New fuel pump and filter. New spheres all round. New alternator. New (Bosch) battery. Replacement AEI box and relocated to above left headlight. Good ‘T Slot’ wheels and very good TRX tyres, 210 front and 190 rear. A couple of hydraulic hard lines replaced when needed. New water pump. Probably other stuff that I’ve forgotten.
Theres obviously’ stuff’ a prospective owner should know. It’s a full spec car, so (EPIC) black leather, sunroof and air-con. The A/C is all there but has never worked, I had it tested, and replaced a holed hardline but never bothered to gas it. Sunroof. Hmmmmmmm………… Google Citroen CX sunroof issues. It’s has them all, but I’ve just had a bit of bodywork tidied up and the sunroof and roof look superb at the moment. It WILL need new seals.
There are a few small tears in the leather, but it’s still incredible
There is corrosion here and there, but absolutely nothing even near to terminal, it’s a solid old thing fundamentally.
The engine bay is ‘workmanlike’ and presentable. The engine, clutch, gearbox, brakes, suspension and hydraulic system are all tough on CXs and this one is no different
I’ve genuinely used this as my daily driver, so several trips to Northern France and Belgium and last summer a thru the night blast to Lake Annecy. This car is perfect for these sort of raids. It’s borderline awful in clogged up traffic.
Its not a rocket ship by modern standards, but it is still quick, and has a wonderful strong, torquey engine that just kinda shoves it along.
I would jump in it and go anywhere, it thrives on journeys, but of course, it’s a 36 year old, complex French car.
It’s got 4ish months MOT.
I’m more than happy to hold a new owner’s hand through initial ownership, I’m an enthusiast not a dealer, and can point them in the direction of specialists that they’ll need to know!
Id like close to £7,000 for it, I think that’s both realistic and fair. I’m putting it here before eBay (sigh) but it will also be on a few other sites.
Happy for people to come and view. I’m in Teddington, West London
