Hello, I am new to the site and I greet you all. I create this thread on the advice of Cortinaman who has already given me advice and I thank him. I would need advice for disassembling the dashboard at the level of the tachometer and the tachometer, how to access the back of these instruments? I can't find any fuse boxes on the vehicle, where are they? Thank you for your help.

hi Gerard welcome to Retro Rides - I'm glad you worked out how to post.
To take out the instruments in front of the driver (the speedometer and tachometer) you need to undo the bezels that hold the light switch and wiper switch and also the larger bezel that holds in the ignition key switch and the windscreen washer switch on the other side. (you can get a special tool to undo the smaller bezels, but you can also use a screwdriver to knock them round if you are careful). When all the bezels are undone you can pull the panel forward (you may need to take off the steering column shroud for clearance) and then disconnect the wiring and speedometer cable and remove the whole unit. The two instruments come out in the same way as the smaller ones in the centre.
As standard the Mk1 Cortina does not have a fuse box - going from memory, there is an in-line fuse for the indicators (I think), but it has been a long time since I had a standard car - mine has been completely rewired with a modern fuse box.
good luck - I look forward to seeing pictures of your car
Cheers

Hi Gerard and welcome to retrorides, as Cortinaman already explained in perfect way i ve just done some pics as well. before you can remove the screenwasher you have to pin through the hole before you can remove the knob, see markings. otherwise as already said, just turn anticlockwise the 4 fixing points then you can lift the whole cluster out. maybe you have to push the speedocable from engine compartment a bit to get more room for unscrewing it! good luck, cheers Hans

Be VERY careful with all of it! 70 year old plastics will be extremely brittle 🤞

Hello everyone, thanks to Cortinaman , Consul315 and to Comfortabblement, your explanations are better than the technical journals I own! Thank you for the explanations concerning the disassembly of the on-board instruments. I’m surprised there’s no fuse on the car, « anything hidden » behind the dashboard? The steering wheel on the Consul315 car is an original (beautiful) steering wheel? I’ll send you pictures of the car as soon as possible and of course news about the progress of the refurbishment (it’s due to go to technical inspection on the 12th of this month! I keep my fingers crossed, they are more and more difficult in Belgium. Thanks again for your help. Gérard PS excuse me for my english!

Don't worry about it gege, we know what you mean 👍 Some early (60,s) fords didn't have a fusebox, my son's 1962 105e is the same He's retro fitted a blade fuse box to the loom to be safe, not expensive or difficult, and a lot cheaper than replacing the loom , or the car.......😳

Good morning everyone, I hope you're all well. The good news is that the Cortina has successfully passed the technical inspection. I admit that she had some success in the car park of the establishment. I'll post the pictures next week. Good end of wekend. Gérard

The steering wheel on the Consul315 car is an original (beautiful) steering wheel? when i bought it, my car had a woodrim wheel (which was standard in certain countries), so i swapped it for a Series 1 1600E wheel, for 2 main reasons. i think it matches the black dash a lot better and it´s better handling too.my white GT, had the same -standard- steering wheel as yours, which i like very much too.

Hello everyone, please forgive me for not communicating! I hope you're all well. I took over the work on the Cortina from the point of view of the dials for me to solve the lighting problems of the dashboard. I followed Consul315’s guidelines which are impeccable! But I can't get the support plate off the instrument panel, is it due to the meter cable only or is there another attachment point? Thank you for your answer. I wonder for consul315, the Cortina shown have the steering wheel right (impeccable interior) , do you live in England or .....? You don't have to answer this question, just out of curiosity. I wish you all a good WE Gérard

Hi Gerard, @"I can't get the support plate off the instrument panel, is it due to the meter cable only or is there another attachment point..." unless it would have been modified it shouldn t have any other att.point. but as you already thought it sometimes helps tp push the speedo cable gently inside through the bulkhead to get better access (see pic of this scrapper)-good luck, Hans

. I wonder for consul315, the Cortina shown have the steering wheel right (impeccable interior) , do you live in England or .... unfortunately not, though it was always my dream to live there one day, but since Brexit this dream has collapsed completely. i live in Austria, which is probably the worst country in Europe to live in when it comes to classic cars (and perhaps many more reasons too) - we have probably the highest taxes (+20% on a car without catalyst) and plenty of cold and bad weather as well as plenty of salt on the roads during the winter.
most of my cars are therefore lhd, though i have a few scrappers that are rhd. i am a great fan of Ford from 50ies to late 70ies, especially the British ones, as they are much nicer and far better quality than the German line, we had as well over here.my main interest was always the Cortina, but i do collect everything from Ford and have small archive with brochures, dealer advertising stuff and so on.
being 2.5 yrs old i saw/noticed the first Cortina in 1966 and was so impressed, that i swore myself, one day i ll have one as well. at that time i lived in a small village that had only a handful of cars (i still remember most of them) and when we moved to a town later on, i always had a thorough look at cars on my way home from school.

Hi Hans, thanks for your answers, I'm going to try to push the meter cable in the hope that I don't have to disconnect it from the gearbox. I was wrong about the rudders, they are left like my Cortina and not right. I too have always loved the Cortina and especially the Lotus, but it is unaffordable in terms of price! I agree with you that the British vehicles are finished to a standard standard. A beautiful example is your Cortina's wooden dashboard. In Belgium, we are a little spoiled for vehicles over 50 years old, registration in ancestor (plate), 30 €! Circulation tax, €61.50 (once) annual circulation tax, €37.91. I was lucky for this car, it is in very good condition, just a little rust on the ends of the chassis behind the front wheels (to be repaired as soon as the weather is nice). I think you are lucky to live in a beautiful country like Austria. Do you find coins in Austria easily? Here, not easy for the Ford, unlike the old Triumph. Brake pads, Ferodo Italy (price 38 €), caliper pistons, 54 € + 48 € for shipping and customs clearance!!! Thank you Brexit. A+ Gérard

Hello, I resumed work on the Cortina, and after driving 5 to 6 km with it, I stopped and the engine also!!! Big difficulties to get it back on track. Once I've cooled down, I can start it. After some research, I'm told "vapor lock" Have you ever had this problem on your Cortina? If so, do you have a solution for this problem? Thank you for your answer.
Good day
Gérard

Hi gege Your best way to communicate is through your posts like this. Unfortunately, there is not always someone who knows the answer and can respond. Vapour lock is usually caused by the fuel lines getting hot, so perhaps some insulation round the fuel lines near the engine might help, also check they are not running too close to the block. I run my Cortina without the pieces of cardboard that block off the gaps either side of the radiator, on the basis that it allows more cool air into the engine bay and I've never had problems with vapour lock - its an easy thing to try. have you got new fuel in the tank - modern high ethanol fuels tend to go off quite quickly and could cause the same problems. hope that helps Cortinaman

Hello everyone, I apologize for the lack of communication with you and it bothers me to ask for your help after such a long absence. I am looking for documentation for adjusting the differential, I need to change the bearings and the compression nozzle. If anyone has the adjustment method, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
