I’ve yet to measure it properly, but yes, it looks like a proper trials one. If it is around the 9:1 mark then I’d leave it alone. I’m in the middle of a bathroom refresh this weekend, but hopefully I’ll get back out to the workshop by the middle of next week and can give you a definite answer then.

As you’ve seen in pretty deep into other jobs at the minute so the bantam hasn’t been a priority. I’ve not even fitted all the bits shown in this thread let alone the others I’ve also bought!

I’d not really done anything on this for ages, it’s just a workshop ornament at the minute with everything I’ve got going on that’s more important. But I did accidentally find someone selling some ‘period correct’ grips I actually like for not much money, so I bought some. I’ve been after some of this type of rock hard rubber/plastic ‘motocross’ grips for ages, as they’re what literally every off road bike ran for the entire ‘60s and ‘70s, so just look right. The modern repros I’ve seen previously have either been all wrong in looks or mega money. These are pretty good looks wise (a bit too much mushroom on the outer end compared to originals, but not too bad) and are £15 so I won’t cry if I drop the bike and punch a hole straight through the end of them. First I had to remove all this lot wrapped around the throttle! Quite a bit of white spirit later- This so how I fit grips. Unlike hairspray, it’s waterproof. Same principle, squirt it in and slide em on, then it sets and glues them. All done and nicely period.

Re- the gaffa tape, a lot of moto x guys use it for holding the grips tight. They put a couple of wraps on the bars, put some petrol in the grip. Slide in on, (bit like the hair spray) but importantly the petrol melts the glue on the gaffa tape, then evaporates off leaving the grip well & truly stuck on tight 😀 Cool looking thing btw

I’ve been chipping away at bits on this between other things, mostly when it’s p1ssing down as it’s tucked away inside but there’s enough room to work on it still. I’ve done a bit more on the pedal assembly. These first two photos show what a company who used to make repro sets but doesn’t anymore used to offer. And this is a genuine rear set that sold on eBay at some point. You can see this used the proper forged foot pegs like I have, not the fabricated versions the above setup used. I’ve got a bit over half of this setup, I have the foot pegs, two out of 3 of the spacers, a hacked about brake pedal that will repair, and the return spring. So what I did next was bought some 7-16” hex bar to allow me to figure out the next bit. I won’t be running a centre stand so I’ve totally ignored that. I’ve gone for stainless as it’s harder/stiffer. This has allowed me to work backwards to get the dimensions of the two anti-rotate tabs. Next job will be to talk to a lazer cutter about those. I sort of ran into a stop there as the job started to cross over with another one, as I’m going to use those tabs to also mount a big old bashguard. Bantam casings are fragile at best, so most triallers you see with have some sort of improvised guard for them. Mines gone a bit beyond that, I bought a 5mm thick foot square bit of ally plate off eBay, and then went through about 3 design iterations on it as the various colours of pen will attest to, before started to cut and drill it. Obviously it ended up with speed holes, although one of them is to allow the plate to clear the footpeg frame boss so it’s sits closer to the frame tube. The D shaped pen marks are roughly where the anti-rotate tabs for the foot pegs will have tabs welded on for this to bolt to. Because this is my new favourite tool, i chamfered all the edges. Then I put it in the vice and hit it with a (hide) hammer. I could have bent it in a more eloquent way with heavy machinery, but I’m sort of after continuing the ‘Built by a man in a shed’ look for this thing, so I kept it simple. The front is attached with an exhaust clamp. KISS technology. It will pull up a bit higher than that at the back when the other tabs are on. Here you can see it’s wide enough to fend off most blows to the casings, and stop the inner sections of the pegs snagging on things too. Sp, that’s that section of the bike all starting to come together and make sense.

The more astute of you will also notice a brand spanking new exhaust front pipe in that there pic up above too. I finally got to junk my ‘make do and mend’ system from my teens. I didn’t buy it new, as they’re about £70, which seemed rather frivolous for this thing. I bought it second hand but not used for £40 with the post. It’s rather too shiny though, I’d have preferred a well used one to match the rest! To go with it I had a cheap repro royal Enfield silencer. I’d actually bought this off eBay yonks ago, but it was such poor quality I’d chucked it back in the box and had a go at the seller. They immediately refunded me and sent 3 more messages apologising profusely, so I guess they knew it was sh1t. I mean it was only about 50 quid so I wasnt expecting concours quality, but I’d at least have expected to be chromed after they’d finished welding it together and not before and then been touched up with galv paint, that then had loads of sawdust stuck to it for good measure! Coupled with a load of pock marks, it was fairly awful. The only reason I’m using it is it was free and I’m hoping it’ll weather down quickly to match the rest of the bike. If not it’s a ‘known’ pattern part and I can easily swap it out. So I mocked it into place with the front pipe (which fitted perfectly) and ascertained two things. It was ridiculously too long, and i needed a stepped adapter as it was much bigger diameter than my meaty 1-3/8” downpipe 😂 It’s found someone on eBay who said they could make this as a custom order, and shock horror not only could they ready my beermat-spec drawing (see below) they wanted a whopping £15 to translate this into stainless steel and convey it to me. Drawing- Product- Colour me slightly amazed that it turned up and was correct, after other recent eBay experiences. MIJ exhaust btw of you need something similar. So i slotted it all together and you can see how silly long it was. I took it off, chopped 6” off the silencer inlet pipe, and put it back on. This was as short as I could go and the kickstart still clear- Happy with that, I ditched the old pillion footrest bar the old system was mounted to, and made up a tab to fit to the now conveniently placed mounting bosses. The joins will be slotted and then clamped with Mikalor type stainless clamps. I’m just waiting on the other one to turn up as I didn’t have that size laying around. And that’s that all looking rather more proper. Another job *almost* ticked off!

Nice work, as usual. Surprised you found the time with all the other stuff going on.
That Todd head you sent me to look at is a 9:1 trials/competition one, and to be honest I don’t think it needs anything doing to it at all. If you let me know your new address I’ll get it sent back to you.

That’s great news on the head, it’s perfect for this. Can believe it was only up the road. This build is accidentally turning out way cooler than I expected!

I keep nibbling at bits on this. Seat risers next. My original competition seat risers were missing. They look like this- so I made some. They’re a bit taller than normal, cos so am I. They’re 1.5” taller than normal ones I think? And I used slightly wider steel strap to balance the look. They’re welded on the backside (you have to do this to standard ones anyway cos they break) but I’ve added some rivets to get the original look. Then I made them look not at all original by filling them full of holes 😂 shame I don’t have any more of the grey to match but at least it’s another bit made and ticked off.
