Hey RR! I've been an active reader here for a while but first got to creating my account now. I'm situated in Norway and bought a 65 RT40 almost a year ago, they are extremely rare cars here so I'm strugling to find parts. I'm trying to keep the original 2R engine, but the carby is giving me a hard time and I cant find a replacement so I'm looking for a complete replacement motor now. I know the obvious choice would be a 12R or 18R, but I've also found a 2T motor from a Carina TA60 for a good price that I'm hoping will fitt in my car. I've had to replace the wiper motor with a modded one from a 2005 Golf, the lower and upper ball joints have been replaced with some Sankei 555 joints that somehow got shipped from Thailand to Norway in under 30 hours. I've had to cut out large parts of rocker panel (i think that's the name?) and floor and weld in new because of rust. Torn out the floor fabric since it was moldy, hook up most new electricals and switches for things including headlights since they were missing when I bought it. With the exception of the drivers seat tho, the seats are in extremely good condition and have been given a pricey treatment to make sure they stay nice. A fun piece of backstory to this car is that it was one of the first 500 Toyotas that came to my country, so that's part of why I'm trying to breathe new life into it. It's been sitting unused in a barn since 1983, but luckily it had a service done right before it was put away. It came with the original sales papers, sign, documents, maintenance book (been amazing to have for fixing things that arent made any more!) If you want to see more of my project then come along, and if you know of good places to get parts then please yell out!

Welcome to the real world.
I grew up with these in South Africa.
Always liked them.
They are so individual today, compared to a load of other stuff from the same era.
That recessed front grille does it for me too.

Put in a New radiator today, kept the original radiator cork because why not. Also going to sand the air-filter housing, thinking of spraying it with the original white colour of the car then airbrushing an old fashioned japanese flag on it. Not sure about the last part, but you're only young once Finaly had the car running long enough for the thermostat to function and found out I have a water pump leak aswell, so my "things to scavange from the depths of the internet" list is getting longer. The sales poster from the last owner who bought it in 1978 for 2500 NOK. I bought it in February for 12500.

Finaly got some new tires for the old girl. Got her both winter tires and summer tires. She wont be used during winter, but it's good to have the option of moving it without a trailer. Still waiting for a new gasket sett to arrive in the mail so I can see if the carby and water pump needs replacing. Going to keep posting in this thread even if the time between posts is long.

Love the car, and especially the history like the previous sale tag- good stuff. Looking forward to seeing more! Thanks! It came with loads of documents, full service history and even the original warranty papers! As luck would have it the guy that fixed the radiator on it was one of the first mechanics to do a service on this exact car, he even had a box of parts for it covered in dust from his younger days he was kind enough to give me. That's the beauty of a car that has barely been more than two countys away from the dealership it was sold at in the 60's.

Mounted the new headlights today, sadly the old paint didnt survive the amount of sun its seen in my ownership. Trying to figure out if I should keep it in the same Pearl White it was delivered with or if I want to try something else. The carburetor is currently dismantled and taking a diesel soak before I assemble it again in hopes that it will fix some of the issues it has idling and cutting of at high rpm. Considering buying an extra RT40 deluxe to steal the more powerfull engine and a few trim pieces.

Finaly started sanding down the RT40 so she can get a nice new coat of paint, but Ive had some trouble with this semi liquid old anti rust goo stuck between the layers of the paint. It clogs up the sand paper extremely fast, so the only solution i found was to shred it with a wire brush and then use lots of acetone to rub it away. I also recieved a carby rebuild kit in the mail so we started the rebuild prossess, but it turns out I have the wrong kit. Luckily an Australian chap named John that I've become aquainted with after hunting down parts for this car for nearly a year and a half was able to find the correct one for me. So now I just have to wait 10 days to finish the rebuild. My mechanic friend that lets me use his small home workshop is working on his 1991 Audi 100 quattro at the same time as I work on my 40 that suddenly died on us while we were on a road trip after having worked fantastic for a year after having been rescued from a barn where it had stood since 2003.So here you have a picture of the two together. It's a lott of pushing the cars in and out since theres only room for one to be worked on at the time in the garage. And just a random picture of the RT40

black goo looks like bitumen based "schutz" underbody sealant, i'm impressed they managed to top coat it!
heat and solvent is really the only way to get it off

But the anoying part is that they covered every inch of the car except hood and trunk lid in it both inside and outside.

So we had a break in at our garage a few nights ago. We still don't think anything was taken since we were awake and noticed them pretty fast. Turns out burglars run fast when a big man in his mid 20's come running towards them half naked. Now, I am former military police and current part time QRF soldier so I felt safe confronting them but I don't advise others to do the same. There's been a string of break inns in the area lately so we most likely helped the police quite a bit by giving them positive ID on the car they use. However (I can't remember if that's supposed to be in one word or two, any help from the brits here?) they had clearly been in the RT40, and it was packed full of parts mostly dissassembled to be given a new coat of paint soon. So the chances are there that they stole a part I will never be able to find in Norway again but time will tell. So we had a huge reality check on the security measures that we need to take when restauring old valuable cars even in a low crime country. So I hope the readers will take this as a reminder to lock their cars, garages and other valuables away. Stay safe.

Finaly time for a update, the carby is now rebuilt. Still runs like curse word but I gather that's on me for being unexperienced at tuning carbs. but as luck would have it, the clutch slave cylinder gave up the moment it was running and ready to drive back into the garage, so now we play the waiting game for a few more weeks untill that arrives. Since it's so old I also ordered a new clutch for it, you know, just in case. I'm about to treat the vinyl seats with some scrubs and oils a local upholsterer advised me to use.
It's probable going to have every single part swapped by the time it's done at this pace.

So, back to work on the RT40. I got tired of spending all my garage hours on the daily so I sold the Forester and bought an 09' Impreza with barely any milage on it. So finaly I have time for the projects again. Just swapped out the clutch slave cylinder and I'm struggeling with the bleeding since it wants positive pressure, any tips from the more experienced mechanics?
