That video is brutal! I'd essentially just put all of the new dct gearboxes into a box marked "here be dragons" and left that shelf well alone, but now I'm intrigued! How does the system work? Do you end up with an auto option or just on the paddles? Cracking build btw

It is a big box, luckily there's only bits of fibreglass in my way 😁 Yes the R25-28 bolts up to the Saab B204 and B234. You just need to space the concentric slave cylinder out 25mm to make up for the non dual mass flywheel Only interested because I have a good R25 box sitting in my garage - I used it to convert a Senator 24V to manual with a cable rather than hydraulic clutch (it was easier to find a non hydraulic pedal box) I broke the car for parts when the rot got too much and the box has been in my garage loft for years Please note that the R25/28 box that fits the Saab engine needs to come from a (d)ohc engine. The 24v has the old cih boltpattern and will not fit. Easy thing to see what type it is is the location of the startermotor. On the ohc version the starter is on the left side looking from the engineside at the bellhouse. Cih has the starter on the other side. |

Yep.
I actually use a 2.2 16v R25/28 behind my 2.4 jtd engine. It used to have up to about 180-200bhp and 400nm of torque but i'm now upgrading to a 20v jtd engine which should make up to 240-250bhp and 500-550nm. I hope the box will take this but otherwise there will be a BMW gs6-37dz gearbox that will be fitted.
DCT is insane, my friend wants this as well and i expect he will do this eventually to one of his cars. I expect there will be more kits available to control these gearboxes as the interest in them grows. They can withstand a lot of power as well.

This thread has made me consider going SAAB route for my Monzadore rather than build the "boat anchor" 6 pot 3.7 24V engine I have all the parts for but I'd want to retain the getrag 265 so back to the plan being the plan  |

The Land Rover is my only non Saab powered vehicle 😆 Bone stock 2.25 which I recently dyno'd What's a bit surreal is that it's pretty much as slow as the Commer was. 38 seconds 0-60 in the Commer Vs 42 seconds in the Landy. The rest of my fleet; Daily auto 9000 with a 255hp B204. 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, Heated seats, air con and sometimes more than 25mpg 😆  My '87 900 turbo which of course was a non turbo 8 valve but then ended up as a 16 valve turbo with management from a 9000. Why keep anything stock? 😁 235hp too.  Price wise your looking at about £1000 for a box and £1000 for a controller. And of course plenty or arseing about to mate it to anything. Oh and as it's relatively early days you can expect to have teething issues. This isn't a K series swap where you can Google the answer 😏 |

I've looked around a bit, and from what I've read, some controllers allow you to hook up a pot meter to the clutch pedal for standing starts & burnouts.
Does yours come that way?
Also, are shifts instantaneous or is there a slight delay? ( some vids seem to show that, but that could be the quality of the vid...)
Price wise, I'm not sure I can swing it ( I'd hook it up to a Chevy V8, so adapters are available for another grand or so )
But I'm definitely going to keep it in mind.
Steering wheel mounted flappy pedals and 10 millisecond shifts do sound very attractive...

My biggest automotive mistake is cutting up my SAAB 900s, awesome car.
Maybe one day ill have another but the idea of a SAAB powered Commer, another car I used to own, tickles my pickle quite a bit. Is there any thread on the commaero?

Cool. I've looked around a bit, and from what I've read, some controllers allow you to hook up a pot meter to the clutch pedal for standing starts & burnouts. Does yours come that way? Also, are shifts instantaneous or is there a slight delay? ( some vids seem to show that, but that could be the quality of the vid...) Yer mine has the option to run a clutch pedal but I don't intend to. You run a bit of pre engagement to quicken the shifts so basically docile at low RPM and throttle inputs and then faster shifts when stepping on it. |

While I definitely like my shift old school and slow with a stick and a pause for breath between blats, I really do enjoy proper engineering challenges done in regular garage setups, and the performance these gearboxes give is just mindblowing.
It also helps that I have a bit of a soft spot for Saab 900s, and Scimitars, and the Saab B-engine. Being a Triumph guy, it's a bit like a 'if only they lasted long enough to develop it' parallel universe.
Out of interest, do you have a pic of the bolt pattern for the Saab B engine? I was wondering if in the redesign they'd changed it from the Slant 4 LT77 pattern as those have detachable bellhousings. Probably more likely on the earlier slanted Saab engines than the vertical ones...

I started off in Triumphs, my first 5 or so cars were Dolomites so I can definitely see the familiarity between the Triumph and later Saab engines. I've seen a few B series Saab engines and yeah the older you go the more similarities they have. I've got a B202 slant 16 valve turbo in my '87 900 and it reminds me of my Sprint powered Dolomite. Just made far better 😃 I've got what I feel is the privilege of having enough cars now that I can drive a 4, 5, 6 speed manuals, 4 speed torque converter autos and hopefully soon a 7 speed DCT. They all have their perks. I don't have any bellhousing dimensions sorry. |
