I missed my old Impreza. It was the only car I've owned out of a LOT of cars that departed my company without my consent, when some thieving scrote nicked it.
Having not fully scratched the itch, and doing what I do, it seemed only right that I save one from the death walk rather than buy a minter.
So that's what we are doing...

Progress is not particularly fast on a lot of my projects, but this might be a record breaker for me simply due to the breath-taking quantity of rust it has. #
Like that night out where you drink so much you start to vomit, then keep vomiting, and as you stand there wondering where all this vomit could be coming from. Basically like that, except the vomit is rust and the experience is less pleasant.
Rest assured this will not be a series of me moaning about rust, we will at some point soon moan about something else.

OK, so with the strip down done, we have hit the common auction site and ordered a hefty amount of parts. Time to start saving what we can, starting with the crusty rear hubs. We also start tackling the corrosion here, but by no means are we finished with that gig!

Woeful lack of chat on this thread, I'm clearly guilty of doing the edity thing without any real context.
So we sorted the fuel leak and cracked on with other fun and games. The rear brakes are a disgrace on this car, probably the worst I have ever seen. Getting the carriers glowing white and STILL fighting to remove a pin was not confidence inspiring. In my previous days of Subaru ownership I'd have thrown the towel in and obtained 2 pots but you do not want to know the sums they seem to go for now. They weren't cheap 10 years ago!!
The rust, yes. I have been spreading this about the updates as it would be a relentless video of grinding sparks, welding, lather rinse repeat. I plan to get the rear quarter finished in the next instalment and all going well that will be the last of the crusty stuff dealt with. Then we can get onto the far more interesting stuff!! Wheels arrive soon, I'm going to be lining up more sympathetic modifications and all the while we will be continuing to de-chav it.
Enjoy!

It's a good watch! I kind of want one of these but they're very much still in the Chav phase over here in NZ, rather than soon to be appreciating classic, and you couldn't show up anywhere respectable in one!

When I tried to get my had been stood for 3 years 2002 GX Sport rolling to sell the rears were locked solid. Calipers were fine as they were refurbished by Gaz Watson a couple of years before, the problem was the handbrake mechanism. Totally rusted, ended up with just a pile of broken rust once I "persuaded" the discs off. here's the remains of the driver's side rear shoes on the back seat! Bloke who bought the car was not bothered tho and must have fixed them as it's now MOT'd

If you still need help with the calipers, give Gaz a PM on Farcebook www.facebook.com/asif.ambothardYou get stuff like this back in exchange for many beer tokens

Found a better pic of the single pot rears that Gaz did for my GX today So far I've just brush painted the 2 pot rears on my WRX - they still work

Just to add a voice that I'm loving this series/build. My Dad had one of first original Imprezas in the UK, then one of the first face lift models (with Prodrive suspension and Speedline alloys; he was a co-driver for a Subaru dealer). They have a special place in my heart. Love seeing you keep one on the road without making it a complete Barrymobile. Appreciate the McDonald's carpark/teenage girlfriend jokes too 😂

I know a certain Project Binky drops an update tomorrow, so here is ours a wee bit earlier so as not to clash with the schedules!!
The rust has been a bit focus on this and I'm glad to say that there is light at the end of the tunnel now. The good news is that from here on its shiny bits and actual, visual improvements!
That's probably all from me until the festive season is over, but I'll be playing catch up in the unit over the holidays and back on it properly in January!

My dad had new one of these. Green with silver wheels. He specified a small boot spoiler instead of the standard wi-fi antenna.
When he went on holiday I took it out and drove it a lot. Great memories. Driving a brand new turbo 2000 as a 19 year old!

The good thing about the high level sti one is you can see THROUGH it in the rear mirror, so it doesn't really hinder vision much.

The small spoiler was just a little 2 or 3 inch lip on the boot lid which looked a lot more traditional. Was quite a smart 'upgrade' at the time as those massive spoilers were still catching on and not for everyone as they are now.

Oh yeah, I know the ones. They actually look pretty good these days in a subtle Q car way!
Certainly better than a bare ar$ed Impreza, a look I still cannot get on board with. It just needs something on the boot.
