As the thread title says, tell me all there is to know about the VW VR engines!
I used to work as a parts department manger at a VW dealer for over 10 years, and I could probably tell you most of what there is to know about the advantages and pitfalls of most VW 4cyl petrols and diesels, but honestly, in that time I cant ever remember having any serious problems or common issues with the VR6 or VR5 lumps.
I used to sell the occasional timing chain kit for earlier 2.8 Vr6's in the Mk3 Golf and Corrado, but that's about it.
I'm considering a VR5 Mk4 Golf or Bora (because exhaust note), anyone had recent experience with these? Anyone done an engine conversion into a older vehicle?

I've not long sold a V6 Bora, it's a great engine to be fair, nothing really goes wrong with them and they respond well to a turbo. MPG wise I used to get 30 running round.

I've had 3 in total, an early 10v 2.3 150 in a Toledo, which in 1999 was a real strong going car, surprised a lot of people. Few years later, I had a 2.3 20v Golf which was a good drive, nice noise, torquey enough but not as good as the 1.8t. Latterly had a 2.3 v5 20v Passat which had every extra under the sun on it, again, lovely drive, lovely noise, but late 20s to the gallon most of the time. The north/south layouts (passat) are worse than the east/west (mk4 shape) as the timing chain sits against the firewall so its an engine out job to do anything with - I think this is what eventually put my passat off the road. If I remember correctly, the 20v versions of the Golf/Bora got the Anniversary/Vrs spec brakes, so 312mm on the front and 256mm vented on the rear, which are notorious for seizing and oddly "mooing" in reverse. Also, I do believe these were a vr6 with a cylinder lopped off!

I only know anecdotally that the v5 is meant to be heavy, thirsty and slow.
Favoured engines for transplants are the various 1.8t and vr6.
Just checking the Internet now and it's 8.2 to 60 mph and 32 mpg.

Wife had a VR6 when I met her. Her idea of a service was to take the car through the car wash and have them Hoover the insideā¦ Managed over 100k from new with her (last 20k was with me looking after it) and then lots of other non-engine related issues started, (cooling / brakes) so it was time to trade in. Was a sound if not particularly athletic drive.

12v VR6 is a tough unit, thirsty but sounds great. Performance is mediocre.
Timing chain is the most common fault on these engines. On 12&24v versions.
24v is a more modern alternative with better performance and economy.
Both respond very well to turbocharging. 500+ bhp with stock rods and pistons is possible. The 24v 3.2 apparently has 2 types of crank, weak and strong. We just put 2.8 crank in a 3.2 and turboed it. Makes 410 bhp on the standard plastic intake, plenty for the MK1 convertible it's in.
Saw a rather special version of the VR6 this weekend. A 2.5 VR6 fsi turbo 300 bhp, original VW. Meant for Chinese market.
W12 is build out of 2 vr engines as well.. nice compact build.
