Well, Tesco have started using the canals again! Of course, if the rail network wasn't absolutely F'in hopeless, there wouldn't be the need to shift so many people and freight by road. I think Japan has the fantastic Bullet trains for folk and a completely seperate rail network for freight. Even if the rail network was fantastic that would only help to get trucks off the motorways, they'd still have to go into city centres and everywhere else. It's 9 miles from Luton to Hitchin by road, better to do it by truck or train into London and then back out to Hitchin? Didn't know the canals were being used again, got a story on the web for that? www.theretailbulletin.com/news/tesco_fights_greenwash_tag_by_taking_to_canals_30-10-07/

Begs the question: Is the pollution of 3 roundtrips by canal boat tug equal, greater, or less than 50 lorry trips. And unless the canal branches terminate at the dock doors of each Tesco store, there will still be lorries involved.
Have they thought about bipedal rickshaw transport? Balloon deliveries?

I was wondering that too,.. however I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on the canal boat pollution because the road based transport would be contributing to congestion which would result in more air pollution. Their statistics are total balls though. At least someone is trying Something though. Our water ways are so under utilised. Also a Canal boat is less likely to jacknife at 6:30 in the morning and cause 8 mile tail backs on the M25 I like the idea of passenger rail system and freight rail system,.. I'm sure we must have that in some places??

Also a Canal boat is less likely to jacknife at 6:30 in the morning If the "Wine Barges" ever jackknifed and loosed their goods in the canal, I'll bet there'd be a bath party in no time.
