	I'm going to put an access door in the gable end of my garage. The garage wall is a single skin with an internal block work pier internally. Whilst not ideal my thoughts are to put the door adjoining this pier as to offer additional support; I have been advised I should build an additional block work pier on the other side of the door frame. What's the consensus on this? Overkill or nessesary evil. I5s also my intention to have the threshold of the door level/on top of the finished floor level of the garage. My know-it-all tells me I need to pick it up and put it on the first course of bricks, but I don't want to be stepping through a portal and tripping up everything I go in and out. I think he's talking rubbish but he has sowen a seed of doubt. Cheers

	I'm no expert, but the second pier I'd say depends on how much wall is above the opening and how much wall is left till the next pier/corner. I can see why another pier would be of benefit but it depends how much wall your having to stabilise. You would want to hinge from the pier side I'd guess, but then your slamming a door against a single brickwork wall. It's not that big a deal to build another. As for having it one course up, I don't see the point other than water ingress. I can't see it helping a huge amount to the the bottom of the wall together. Alot will depend on exactly how the garage has been built I guess. I'd just do it and if it falls down, id just fix it 😂 Still, I'm sure folk who actually know what they are doing will advise soon.

	For the sake of a few more breeze blocks and a few bags of concrete is it worth not doing?

	I'd stick the pier in and a decent lintel to give the brick frame some rigidity. I'd also put the doorstep off the ground, stop leaves, mice etc blowing/strolling into the garage.
