Hi. I'm a long term member but infrequent poster here. I'm back into the classic scene with this week's purchase.
A 1996 W124 (S124) E300 diesel, complete with the apparently 'legendary' 3.0 OM606 diesel.
Naturally aspirated and with a four-speed auto, I can honestly say it's one of the slowest cars I've ever owned and I absolutely love it. I've been looking for a good one without rusty arches but within my small budget and this one came up for sale at the other end of the country (I'm in Ormskirk, the car was in Somerset).
6 hours and four trains later, I was at Yeovil junction station to meet the seller in the car park. I was a bit nervous because I'd only bought a one-way ticket and didn't have a contingency plan to get me back to Lancashire if the car was rubbish or the seller didn't turn up.
As it happens, the car is exactly as described. Rust free, 7 seats and mechanically great.
The battery (which the owner had had to charge) died during the viewing, which gave me extra haggling room. The only other faults that he listed were that the driver's window didn't work and the instrumentation illumination didn't work.
We struck a deal and I drove it the 240 miles home. Because of a toilet stop on the M5, the engine wouldn't start again (because of the knackered battery) but a nice chap in a T4 van gave it a jump start and the car got me home.
I knew it was slow but I couldn't see how slow cos the gauges didn't illuminate.
New battery on and it's also sorted the non working driver's window. Quick twiddling back and forth on the dash brighteners knob has sorted the dashboard illumination (potentiometer was probably a bit dirty).
I love it and made up to be back in a classic!
