My sandrail. I traded it against a Fiat 850, years ago. I was after a specific kind of sandrail, and I think they call this style of tubeframe a HiJumper. It is very similar to a sandrail that was sold in the UK. When I got it, it was powered by a 1200 singleport, and it had swingaxle rear suspension.

The guy I got it from scared himself because of some very sketchy handling. And at a quick glance it was pretty obvious to me that whoever built the thing got the rear toe in/out completely wrong. That will do it... To fix that, I got a IRS transmission ( a 002 Bus box, later upgraded to a 091 side shift Bus box ) I got EMPI VW Thing spindles to fit VW Bug IRS arms but because VW Thing driveshafts are rare and expensive I got a set of Porsche 944 Driveshafts out of a junkyard. Those are slightly longer, but since I had to weld in the pivot points for the IRS anyway, I could make it a little wider to the match the shafts.

I never drove it with the 1200 single port. I had no interest in it, but because it was freshly rebuilt it was good trading material. I bought another very cheap none running sandrail ( $350, if I remember correctly), Which gave me a 2 litre Pinto and a adapterplate + flywheel. The transmission was busted, and I sold the engineless frame. The engine was stock, but it came with a very rare Mickey Thompson cam cover. I built it into this. And stuck it into the rail.

The UK ones were the UVA fugitive 2 and the Kingfisher Chenworth, Which I think were straight copies of an American rail anyway Anyway looking forward to reading about yours... our Fug came with a 1200 in it too, and we didn’t run that in it either

The 091 side shift box is a lot cheaper than a front shift one, because the shift mechanism is a lot harder to solve. There are some aftermarket solutions out there, but they look kind of Rube Goldberg overcomplicated to me, most ( or all ) involve sliding rods in bearings ( probably not good in a dirty & sandy environment ), and way too expensive for what they are. So I made my own. I built it off the stock shifter, so the reverse lockout still works as it should. And the rest is done with just a couple of heimjoints and a connector to the shifter that I made out of a steering U-joint. ( in other words, stuff that I had laying around ) It was cheap to build and works great ( a lot more accurate and direct that a regular nose shift VW box )

I see a Dutch Laser pipe.
Had one on my R1150GS, certainly improved power, but also liked to flash a bit and popped and banged at times.
Watching this thread of course.

I put lights and a windshield on it, which made it streetlegal here in Arizona.

It is absolutely amazing off road, but I didn't like how much dirt and sand would get sucked into the drivers compartment. Most of which seemed to end up in your eyes.. So I put side panels and a roofpanel on it. And a cover over the radiator to deflect the hot air backwards.

PS: I was involved in off road racing in the 80’s and crewed for a friends Sandmaster
It started life as a single seater but was widened to be a two seater.
1600 VW motor at the time.

Because I can never leave well enough alone, I built a supercharger setup for it. Which was a big disappointment, I suspect there is a internal problem with the blower ( a swapmeet find ) or the blow off valve. It would backfire as soon as you'd blip the throttle and build boost. And I was not able to fix it.

So I started over with a turbo setup. Which was basically a Ak Miller Pangra setup.

But I wasn't happy with that either, so I made my own setup with the Ak Miller exhaust manifold, a turbo off a 2.3 SVO Ford, an intake manifold that I adapted from a racing intake meant for a 1600 Kent, feeding into a Maserati pressure box and a Maserati Carb, through a Audi intercooler.

Much better...
But the fuel pressure metering was kind of hit & miss.
Being a blow through system, the fuel pressure has to rise and fall in relation to the boost.
To do that I got a high pressure electric pump, and I stepped the pressure down from 125PSI to hopefully close to what I needed.
Trouble was, to accurately get it to the 3 PSI the carb needs when it is off boost ( at idle and low speeds) was tricky.
So it tended to over pressurize the carb and flood the engine.
So now I'm going back to a Maserati electric pump and pressure regulator ( all parts that were matched on a production car )
I'm still experimenting with it and I'm waiting on some parts to come.
But it is already running a lot better.

Which is great because I also use the sandrail to pick up and move engines. But also, when I have this completely dialed in, I plan to copy it on the BMW Bike engine in the Fiat 500 spaceframe racer... ( but with added Water/Methanol injection to control knock )

I almost forgot another thing I did on my rail. I needed a place for my switches, idiot lights, starter key, and turn signal switch. I had an old EMPI VW valve cover that I sandblasted to get it clean. I milled some holes in it. So I could weld in a couple of aluminum slugs I made on my lathe. That gave me a place for the key switch and the horn button. I then drilled a couple of holes for the idiot lights and the switches. And a slot for the turnsignal switch. And mounted to the rail...
