Hi All,
I’m trying a budget (ish) turbo vw afh build for my mk1 polo. Ive come to the turbo selection and am at a bit of a loss.
Ive looked through compressor maps/lots of shiny turbos that are out of my budget.
Does the collective wisdom know of any oem/wallet friendly t2 turbos that may suffice.
The turbo that looks the best fit would be a holset he221 but there about 500+, similar for a gt2554.
I’m looking for about 1-1.2 bar on a 1.4l engine (200bhp+ 8krpm).
Thanks in advance
Any suggestions

A HE221 is a bit overkill for what your trying to do, it will lag alot on a 1.4l engine. Which engine is it getting fitted to?

It’s going in a vw afh, 1.4 16v (I may up this to 1.6 though). Compression ratio works out to be 10:1 so figured could go with a slightly bigger turbo (and can up the rpm too).
It looked right in the sweet spot of the compressor map I found but I’ve only recently got into the theory. Reading round it might be a bit too big though
Thanks

I'd say your best bet is to get a second hand unit from a manufactured car which already has a 1.4 turbocharged engine. Or at least look at owners clubs for those cars and see what people are fitting. Fiat and Renault did some 1.4 turbocharged cars. An example, this turbocharger from a MINI Cooper S. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114774885071It's a modern turbocharged engine so the turbocharger will be sized nicely for a 1.6 engine for street use and you shouldn't feel too much lag. The MINI also has overboost functionality where the ECU will occasionally allow more than the maximum boost for one or two accelerations. If they think from an OEM perspective that overboosting the turbo is ok then for your aftermarket application it is probably ok to set the boost quite high without breaking the turbocharger. If you wanted something more for the 1.4 engine do a search for a turbo from a 1.4 litre.
